SCENARIO:
This lesson is a week- long unit on banned books and close reading. It will focus on reasons behind censorship.
Excerpts will be taken from The Bluest Eye, The Color Purple, Song of Solomon, Invisible Man, and etc.
The classroom teacher will be responsible for the following:
Create a polleverywhere.com
Create the literature circle role sheets
Provide guidelines for the book trailer
Will assist students who have problems with their technological project during the media specialist
presenation.

The Media Specialist will be responsible for the following:


Will develop a rubric concerning the technological aspect of the project.
Will guide students in the development of their book trailer using Movie Maker or Animoto

READING COMPREHENSION STRATEGY:
Teacher will take an excerpt from banned books and divide groups into literature circles. Each group will read an
excerpt from a different banned book. Each student will have a different role. The roles range from Vocabulary
Enricher, Discussion Director, Literary Luminary, Illustrator, Summarizer and Researcher. The students will
complete their job based on the excerpt. Upon completion, the students will discuss their findings within their
group and then share with the class.

Students will create a banned book poster about their novel excerpt.

use information from reading excerpt in their literature circles and web based materials for their book
trailer
create a book trailer using information from reading and from the web .

ESTIMATED LESSON TIME:


55 minutes a day for 5 days (1 week)
ASSESSMENT
Product: Media Specialist and teacher assess the book trailer using the rubric
Process: Media Specialist and teacher observe students as they work on technology project
Student self-questioning:
Did I understand the reading?
Did I participate and contribute to the group learning activity?

INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN
Begin by polling students. Ask how many of them are familiar with the following titles:
Captain Underpants series
A Wrinkle in Time
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
The Harry Potter series
The Higher Power of Lucky
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark
In the Night Kitchen
Bridge to Terabithia
The Stupids series
The Bluest Eye
After they are finished, teacher will ask the students what they think these books have in common.
Teacher will inform students that these are all banned books.

(The teacher will create a poll of different books and ask students which books have the heard of or read before

Together the class will brainstorm why the books are banned.
