EXPERIMENT NO: 1

ANGLE MEASUREMENT USING BEVEL PROTRACTOR

AIM: To measure the angle of the given component using bevel protractor.
TOOLS REQUIRED: Surface Plate, Bevel protractor, & specimens.

THEORY:
The simplest instrument for measuring the angle between two faces of a component is a bevel
protractor. It consists of a base plate attached to the main body, stock and an adjustable blade is
attached to a circular plate containing vernier scale. The adjustable blade is capable of sliding
freely along the groove provided on it and can be clamped at any convenient length. The
adjustable blade along with the circular plate containing vernier scale can rotate freely about the
centre of the main scale engraved on the body of the instrument and can be locked in any
position with the help of clamping knob. An acute angle plate attachment is provided for the
purpose of measuring acute angle. The base plate is made flat so that it can be laid flat upon the
work and type of angle can be measured from 0 to 360.
The main scale is graduated in degrees of arc. The vernier scale has 12 divisions on either side
of the centre zero. They are marked 0-60 minutes of arc, so that each division of the vernier is
equal to 5 which is the least count of the instrument.

PROCEDURE:
1. Wear the gloves.
2. Clean the instrument with any cleansing agent with a lint free cloth.
3. Adjust the protractor for zero reading and find zero error if any.
4. Fix the blade in the circular plate.
5. Hold the component whose angle is to be determined between the blade and the stock.
6. Note down the main scale reading (MSR) and coinciding vernier division (CVD) on the
main scale and the vernier scale.
7. Calculate the total reading and tabulate.
8. Repeat the procedure for other angles of component.
DIAGRAM

Precautions:
1. Check zero error
2. Handle with care
3. Cleaning the instrument before and after use
4. Place the instrument in its box

OBSERVATIONS:

Least count = smallest division on main scale / number of division on vernier scale.
LC = (1)/12 = 60/12 = 5
Therefore Least count of bevel protractor = 5

FORMULA USED:

Total Reading (TR) = (MSR + CVD * LC)

TABULAR COLUMN:

Total Reading

a. Triangle

b. Pentagon

c. Hexagon

CALCULATIONS:
RESULT: The angle of the given specimen is (in degree, minute, seconds) a. b. c.

And the error found is a. b. c.
