Semester 1 Final Project

Synthesis of Alkaloid

1. What is the purpose of your compound? How is it useful?

- Alkaloid, its mostly found in plants. It contains one or more nitrogen atoms in multi-ring
structures. The purpose of the Alkaloid is to react with acids to form salts. And also can
protect plants from insects and herbivores, control the growth factors, and detoxification
agents for plants. The Alkaloid is useful because it can be a medicine for nervous system;
codeine, and morphine. These drugs can make people addicted and exaggerate a good
feeling with no psychological side effects. Alkaloid is useful in a medical.

2. What is the starting material to make your product?

- 0.5g NaBH4 , 2.42g 3-Benzyloxy-4-methoxybenzaldehyde 3

3. What is the % yield given in the paper?

- The percent yield of Alkaloid is 96%

4. How many grams of product were made?

- 2.35g

5. How many moles of product were made?

- 2.35g * 1 mole C15H16O3 / 244.2884g C15H16O3

= 9.62 *10^-3 moles C15H16O3

6. How many grams of product would be produced if they obtained a 95% yield?

- NaBH4 + C15H14O3 -> C15H16O3

- NaBH4 = 37.8326 g
- C15H14O3 = 242.2726 g
- C15H16O3 = 244.2884 g
- (0.5g NaBH4 * 1 mole NaBH4 / 37.8326g NaBH4) * (1mole C15H16O3 / 1 mole
NaBH4)
= 0.013 mole C15H16O3 -> Excess Reagents
- (2.42g C15H14O3 * 1 mole C15H14O3 / 242.2726g C15H14O3) * (1 mole C15H16O3 /
1 mole C15H14O3)
= 9.989 * 10^-3 mole C15H16O3 -> Limiting Reagents * (244.2884 g C15H16O3 / 1
mole C15H16O3)
= 2.44 g C15H16O3 (Theoretical yield)
- 95/100 = Actual Yield / 2.44g C15H16O3
= 95/100 * 2.44g C15H16O3 = 2.318g C15H16O3

7. If they started with 5 grams of starting material, how much product could they have
theoretically made?

- (5.00 g C15H14O3 * 1 mole C15H14O3 / 242.2726g C15H14O3) * (1 mole

C15H16O3 / 1 mole C15H14O3) == 0.021 mole C15H16O3 -> Limiting Reagents *
(244.2884g C15H16O3 / 1 mole C15H16O3)
= 5.13 g C15H16O3
- (5.00 g NaBH4 * 1 mole NaBH4 / 37.8326g NaBH4) * (1 mole C15H16O3 / 1 mole
NaBH4)
= 0.132 mole C15H16O3 -> Excess Reagents

8. If we needed to make 10 grams of product, how much starting material would we need to
use?

- 10.0 g C15H16O3 * (1 mole C15H16O3 / 244.2884 g C15H16O3) * ( 1 mole C15H14O3

/ 1 mole C15H16O3)
= 0.041 mol C15H14O3 -> Limiting Reagents * (242.2726 g C15H14O3 / 1 mole
C15H14O3)

Final answer = 9.92 g C15H14O3
