PRESS RELEASE

Date: March 29, 2017

On March 23rd at approximately 5:22 pm Decatur Police Patrol Officers, the Decatur Fire
Department and Decatur Ambulance Service all responded to a home in the 1100 block of E.
Division in reference to a 5 month old child not breathing. The child was transported from the
scene to Decatur Memorial Hospital. The Child was later transferred to St. Johns Hospital in
Springfield.

Decatur Police Department Detectives began an investigation into the incident leading up
to the child not breathing and Emergency Services being summoned to the scene. On March 28th
the child was declared deceased at St. Johns Hospital. It was determined that the child sustained
injuries, and subsequently died from injuries consistent with abuse.

On March 29, 2017 probable cause was developed and Duan L. Lewis, age 23 was
arrested and booked into the Macon County Jail charged with Murder in the death of the 5 month
old child.

The investigation is still ongoing and additional arrests are still possible in regards to this
case.
