Example:
In section 1-1 Variables and expressions, students learned how to write algebraic expression
from the given math terminology. First, they defined the terms that make up the verbal
mathematical sentence using mathematical symbols and operations. Then they rewrote the
sentence using only algebraic symbols and operations. Finally, they solved algebraic
expression for the given variable. This connects to the idea of word problems because we
have to know how to write an algebraic expression from the words in the problem.

Chapter 9 Right Triangles and Trigonometry

Sec. 9.1 - The Pythagorean Theorem


9-1 The Pythagorean Theorem, students learned how to use the Pythagorean Theorem. First, they
were familiarized with the pythagorean theorem and the pythagorean theorem triples. Then they
were introduced to the converse of the pythagorean theorem. Finally, they classified different
triangles. This connects to other ways students have learned to solve triangles.

Sec. 9.2 - Special Right Triangles


9-2 Special right triangles, students learned how to find lengths in special right triangles. First,
they were introduced to theorem 9.4 which covers triangles with 45-45-90 . Then they were
introduced theorem 9.5 which includes triangles with 30-60-90 degree angles. Finally, they used
these skills to solve real life problems. This connects to the pythagorean theorem and builds on
what students learned in the last chapter.

Sec. 9.3 - Similar Right Triangles


9-3 Similar Right Triangles, students learned how to identify similar triangles. First, they were
introduced to the right triangle similarity theorem. Then they solved problems using the triangle
similarity theorem. Finally, they used the geometric mean. This connects to the main ideas of
triangles, but introduced two new concepts for the students.

Sec. 9.4 - The Tangent Ratio


9-4 The tangent Ratio, students learned how to use the tangent ratio. First, they are taught how to
find leg lengths. Then they used special right triangles to find a tangent. Finally, they used their
skills to solve real life problems. This connects to what students have been previously learning.

Sec. 9.5 - The Sine and Cosine Ratios


9-5 The Sine and Cosine Ratios, students learned how to use sine and cosine ratios. First, they
find the sine angle measures in special right triangles. Then they find cosine angle measures in
special right triangles. Finally, they solved real life problems using sine and cosine. This
connects to the idea of word problems because we have to know how to write an algebraic
expression from the words in the problem.

Sec. 9.6 - Solving Right Triangles


9-6 Solving Right Triangles, students learned how to to solve right triangles. First, they use
inverse trigonometric ratios. Then they were shown how to find angle measures. Finally, they
used these skills to solve real life problems. This connects to what students have been learning,

but builds upon and asks more of students.

Sec. 9.7 Law of Sines and Law of Cosines


9-7 Law of Sines and Cosines, students learned how to find areas of triangles. First, they use the
law of sines to solve triangles. Then they they use the law of cosines to solve triangles. Finally,
they used both, law of sines and law of cosines, to solve real life problems. This connects to
curriculum being taught and allows students to make connections to past lessons.
