One day, a poor boy, who was selling goods from door
to door to pay his way through school, found he had only
one thin dime left, and he was hungry. He decided he
would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost
his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.
Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She
thought he looked hungry, so brought him a large glass of
milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, How much do I
owe you?
You dont owe me anything, she replied. Mother has
taught us never to accept pay for a kindness.
He said, Then I thank you from my heart.
Years later, that young woman became critically ill.
The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the
big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare
disease.
Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. He
recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation
room determined to do his best to save her life. From that
day, he gave special attention to the case.
After a long struggle, the battle was won. The final
bill was sent to her room. However, she feared to open it,
for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for
it all. Finally, she looked, and something caught her
attention on the side of the bill. She read the following
words:
Paid in full with one glass of milk Dr. Howard Kelly.
2 A POUND OF BUTTER

There was a farmer who sold a pound of butter to
the baker. One day the baker decided to weigh the
butter to see if he was getting a pound and he found
that he was not. This angered him and he took the
farmer to court. The judge asked the farmer if he was
using any measure.
3 BANK ACCOUNT

Imagine there is a bank, which credits your
account each morning with RM86,400, carries over no
balance from day to day, allows you to keep no cash
balance, and every evening cancels whatever part of
the amount you had failed to use during the day.

4 BUILDING BRIDGES

Once upon a time two brothers who lived on adjoining
farms fell into conflict. One morning there was a knock on
John's door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter's
toolbox. "I'm looking for a few days work," he said. "Perhaps
you would have a few small jobs here and there. Could I help
you?"
"Yes," said the older brother. "I do have a job for you. Look
across the creek at that farm. That's my neighbour; in fact, it's
my younger brother. Last week there was a meadow between
us and he took his bulldozer to the river and now there is a
creek between us. I want you to build me a fence an 8-foot
fence so I won't need to see his place anymore."
The carpenter said, "I think I understand the situation. I'll
do a job that pleases you."
The older brother had to go to town, so he helped the
carpenter get the materials ready and then he left. In the
meantime, the carpenter worked hard all that day measuring,
sawing, nailing.
At about, sunset when the farmer returned, the carpenter
had just finished his job. The farmer's eyes opened wide, his
jaw dropped. There was no fence there at all. It was a bridge!
A bridge stretching from one side of the creek to the other! A
fine piece of work, handrails and all and the neighbour, his
younger brother, was coming across, his hand outstretched.
"You are quite a fellow to build this bridge after all I've said and
done."
The two brothers stood at each end of the bridge, and
then they met in the middle, taking each other's hand. They
turned to see the carpenter hoist his toolbox on his shoulder.
"No, wait! Stay a few days. I've a lot of other projects for you,"
said the older brother.

more bridges to build."
One day a man saw an old lady, stranded on the side of the road. So,
he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out. His old car was still
sputtering when he approached her. Even with the smile on his face, he
could see that she was frightened; so, he said, Im here to help you, maam.
Why dont you wait in the car where its warm? By the way, my name is
Bryan Anderson.
Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad
enough. As he was tightening up the lug nuts, she rolled down the window
and began to talk to him. She couldnt thank him enough for coming to her
aid. Bryan just smiled as he closed her trunk.
The lady asked how much she owed him. Bryan never thought twice
about being paid. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the
next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the
assistance they needed, and Bryan added, And think of me.
A few miles down the road the lady saw a small cafe. She went in to
grab a bite to eat, and take the chill off before she continued her trip home.
The waitress went over with a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. She had a
sweet smile. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months
pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude. The
old lady wondered how someone who had so little could be so giving to a
stranger. Then she remembered Bryan.
After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a hundred dollar bill.
The waitress quickly went to get change for her hundred dollar bill, but the
old lady had slipped right out the door. She was gone by the time the
waitress came back. Then, she noticed something written on the napkin.
You dont owe me anything. I have been there too. Somebody once
helped me out, the way Im helping you. If you really want to pay me back,
here is what you do, do not let this chain of love end with you. Under the
napkin were four more $100 bills.
That night when she got home from work and climbed into bed, she
was thinking about the money and what the lady had written. With the
baby due next month, it was going to be hard. She knew how worried her
husband was, and as he lay sleeping next to her, she whispered soft and
low, Everythings going to be all right. I love you, Bryan Anderson.
You say: your job isn't what it should be. Step out and prepare
yourself for a better job by going to night school or taking
correspondence classes or enlisting in an apprentice program. You
can obtain the training for a job more suitable to your talents.
You say: you don't have the money to live a normal life. Right
now, sit down and make yourself a budget. Then, live below your
means until you are free from debt. You can overcome the burden of
debt.
You say: life has been unfair to you. Then, it's time to reach out
to others. As you help others overcome the disparity of life's
experiences, you will be able to master your own talents better for the
good of all. Life is not really yours, you know. It's lent to you for a time
by the Giver of Life. Don't put your trust in the gift. Put your trust in the
Giver.
Don't feel sorry for yourself. Look at the talents God has given
you. Give of yourself to others and you won't find a need to complain
about your life.
***Discuss what your talents are and how you can help
others***
At the end, the quality of our lives is up to each one of us. The
formula is simple and factual: When we choose to focus in negativity
it is what we attract, and when we choose to focus in positivity it is
what we attract. It is time to be honest with ourselves; nobody can
make us miserable or happy, successful or fail but our attitude the
positive or negative way we choose to view the world.
The moment we take responsibility for our life, our life will
definitely change. Take action now; there is no such thing as the
perfect time or right moment.
A lot of quiet individuals dont think much of what they do, but
when they get compliments for things they didnt realize about
themselves, it helps to build self-esteem, Wilson said.
We need to break free of all the negativity that surrounds us, said
Jillian Carney, a member of the WeStopHate club. The main goal of
WeStopHate club is to give students a safe environment and to provide
them with a comforting place where theyre free to be themselves.
It seemed that, as one problem was solved, a new one arose. Her
mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and
placed each on a high flame. Soon the pots came to a boil. In the first,
she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she
placed ground coffee beans.
She let them sit and boil, without saying a word. In about twenty
minutes, she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed
them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then
she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her daughter,
she asked, "Tell me. What do you see?"
"Carrots, eggs, and coffee," the young woman replied. The mother
brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted
that they were soft. She then asked her to take an egg and break it. After
pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, she asked
her to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma.
The daughter then asked, "What does it mean, mother?"
Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same
adversity boiling water but each reacted differently. The carrot went in
strong, hard and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the
boiling water, it softened and became weak.
The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid
interior; but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became
hardened! The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they
were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.
"Which are you?" the mother asked her daughter. "When adversity
knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg, or a
coffee bean?" Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems
strong but with pain and adversity, do I wilt and become soft and lose my
strength? Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart but changes
with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit but after a death, a breakup, or a
hardship, does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and
tough with a hardened heart? Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean
If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get
better and change the situation around you. When the hours are the
darkest and trials are their greatest, how do you handle adversity? Are
you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?
Once upon a time there was a lion that grew so old that he was unable
to kill any prey for his food. So, he said to himself, "I must do something to
stay my stomach else I will die of starvation."
He kept thinking and thinking and at last an idea clicked in his mind. He
decided to lie down in the cave pretending to be ill and then who-so-ever will
come to enquire about his health, will become his prey. The old lion put his
wicked plan into practice and it worked. Many of his well-wishers got killed;
but evil is short lived.
One day, a fox came to visit the ailing lion. As foxes are clever by
nature, the fox stood at the mouth of the cave and looked about. His sixth
sense worked and he came to know the reality. So, he called out to the lion
from outside and said, "How are you, sir?"
The lion replied, "I am not feeling well at all. But why don't you come
inside?"
Then the fox replied, "I would love to come in, sir! But on seeing, all foot
prints going into your cave and none coming out, I would be foolish to come
in."
Two men were walking along one summer day. Soon it became too hot
to go any further and, seeing a large plane tree nearby, they threw themselves
on the ground to rest in its shade.
Gazing up into the branches, one man said to the other, What a
useless tree this is. It does not have fruit or nuts that we can eat and we
cannot even use its wood for anything.
The girl put her hand into the moneybag and drew out a
pebble. Without looking at it, she fumbled and let it fall onto the
pebble-strewn path where it immediately became lost among
all the other pebbles.
"Oh, how clumsy of me," she said. "But never mind, if you
look into the bag for the one that is left, you will be able to tell
which pebble I picked." Since the remaining pebble is black, it
must be assumed that she had picked the white one; and since
the moneylender dared not admit his dishonesty, the girl
Initially, the old mule was hysterical! However, as the farmer and
his neighbours continued shovelling and the dirt hit his back, a thought
struck him. It suddenly dawned on him that every time a shovel load of
dirt landed on his back, HE WOULD SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP!
This he did, blow after blow. Shake it off and step up shake it off
and step up.
"Captain, Captain!" the officer kept yelling, while holding on to one of the
deck's bars to avoid falling off the boat.
Suddenly, while trying to approach the captain, a huge wave almost made the
boat tip over and the officer fell and rolled on the deck until he found another rail to
hold on to. After several attempts, the officer finally was able to reach his fighting,
drenched, and tired captain who had started to yell out his frustrations and thoughts
to the raging waves.
"If I am a good hard working man, why does this happen to me? And why
can't I get out of this one? I have been sailing the open ocean for years to fish the
best catch and get support for my family!! Why, why, why?"
At that moment his crew officer was able to grab the captain's shoulder and
make him turn so that the captain could hear him.
The captain looked at him furiously for distracting him from his difficult task.
"What do you need officer? Don't you see I am trying to control the ship and find our
way back?" screamed the captain.
His officer kept holding onto the captain and pointed in the opposite direction,
towards the stern. "Captain!" he replied. "The lighthouse is right over there, on the
other side. We are going in the wrong direction!!!"
.A friend of mine, Jeff, was a year behind because he had cancer and had been
going through intensive chemotherapy during what should have been his first year. I
spent many days up at the cancer ward visiting Jeff.
During my second year, Jeff was able to register for his first year courses and on
the days when he was up to it, he would go to class. Jeff knew that these were the last
weeks of his life and his priority was not to go sky-diving and visit exotic lands; all he
wanted to do was be a regular 20-year-old and go to his first classes at university.
Jeff would have known that he was never going to graduate and yet he was able
to see the value and gift that education was and spent his last few weeks learning.
While Jeff was learning about Chemistry, Physics and Calculus, he was also teaching
me an important life-long lesson Go to Class!
It didnt seem important but he taught me the importance of taking full advantage
of the basic things in life. The best things in life are not those rare moments that are
exceptional, but those everyday moments, the routine that we create, the regular ways
that we occupy our time and build our life. If we can find inspiration in the everyday, we
will be present and engaged in ways that will invariably lead to success and happiness.
Jeff passed away on 10 th October of my second year. He only made it to his first
month of university. From that moment on, I saw each class and assignment differently.
When I started to feel overwhelmed, tired and stressed out, I would think of Jeff and it
revitalized me. I have always gone to class. It is a simple way that I pay tribute to Jeffs
strength and honour his memory.
This experiment was repeated several dozen times over the next
few weeks. Each time, the shark got less aggressive and made fewer
attempts to attack the bait fish, until eventually, the shark got tired of
hitting the fiberglass divider and simply stopped attacking altogether.
The marine biologist then removed the fiberglass divider, but the
shark didnt attack. The shark was trained to believe a barrier existed
between it and the bait fish, so the bait fish swam wherever they wished,
free from harm.
The moral of the story: Many of us, after experiencing setbacks and
failures, emotionally give up and stop trying. Like the shark in the story,
we believe that because we were unsuccessful in the past, we will
always be unsuccessful. In other words, we continue to see a barrier in
our heads, even when no real barrier exists between where we are and
where we want to go.
The past Sunday, my curiosity got the better of me, so I stopped jogging and
walked over to her. As I got closer, I realised that the metal cage was in fact a small
trap. There were three turtles, unharmed, slowly walking around the base of the
trap. She had a fourth turtle in her lap that she was carefully scrubbing with a
spongy brush.
Hello, I said. I see you here every Sunday morning. If you dont mind my
nosiness, Id love to know what youre doing with these turtles.
She smiled. Im cleaning off their shells, she replied. Anything on a turtles
shell, like algae or scum, reduces the turtles ability to absorb heat and impedes its
ability to swim. It can also corrode and weaken the shell over time.
She went on: I spend a couple of hours each Sunday morning, relaxing by
this lake and helping these little guys out. Its my own strange way of making a
difference.
But dont most freshwater turtles live their whole lives with algae and scum
hanging from their shells? I asked.
I scratched my head. Well then, dont you think your time could be better
spent? I mean, I think your efforts are kind and all, but there are fresh water turtles
living in lakes all around the world. And 99% of these turtles dont have kind people
like you to help them clean off their shells. So, no offense but how exactly are
your localised efforts here truly making a difference?
The woman giggled aloud. She then looked down at the turtle in her lap,
scrubbed off the last piece of algae from its shell, and said, Sweetie, if this little guy
could talk, hed tell you I had just made all the difference in the world.
The moral of the story: You can change the world maybe not all at once, but
one person, one animal, and one good deed at a time. Wake up every morning and
pretend like what you do make a difference. It does matter.
One day a professor entered the classroom and asked his students to
prepare for a surprise test. They waited anxiously at their desks for the test to
begin. The professor handed out the question paper with the text facing down
as usual. Once he had handed them all out, he asked his students to turn the
page and begin. To everyones surprise, there were no questions, just a black
dot in the centre of the page.
The professor, seeing the expression on everyones face, told them the
following, I want you to write what you see there. At the end of the class, the
professor took all the answer papers and started reading each one of them
aloud in front of all the students. All of them described the black dot, trying to
explain its position in the middle of the sheet, etc.
After all had been read, the classroom was silent. The professor began
to explain, I am not going to grade you on this; I just wanted to give you
something to think about. No one wrote about the white part of the paper.
Everyone focused on the black dot and the same happens in our lives. We
have white paper to observe and enjoy, but we always focus on the dark
spots. Our life is a gift given to us by God with love and care. We always
have reasons to celebrate, nature renewing itself every day, our friends
around us, the miracles we see every day.
A man and his daughter were playing in the park. His young
daughter spotted an apple vendor. She asked her father to buy her
an apple. Father didnt bring much money with him, but it was
enough to purchase two apples. So, he bought two apples and gave
them to his daughter.
His daughter held one apple in each of her two hands. Then,
the father asked her if she will share one apple with him. Upon
hearing this, his daughter quickly took a bite from one apple; and
before her father could speak, she also took a bite from the second
apple.
Suddenly, his daughter said, Father, you have this one; this
one is much juicier and sweeter. Her father was speechless. He
felt bad about making the judgement so quickly about a small child.
However, his smile came back after knowing why his daughter had
quickly taken a bite from each apple.
The teacher told him, You did like the one chocolate very much
but still you kept looking for a bigger one. And later, you realised that
what you let go off was the best chocolate you could find there. That my
dear is called Greed.
The Dean thought for a minute and said they can have the
re-test after 3 days. They thanked him and said they will be ready
by that time.
On the third day, they appeared before the Dean. The Dean
said that as this was a Special Condition Test, all four were
required to sit in separate classrooms for the test. They all agreed
as they had prepared well in the last 3 days.
***Do you think the students did the right thing? Why?
***
Moral: If you help others, then they will also help you.
One day, while walking along a dusty road, he saw a purse; so, he
picked it up and noticed that the purse was empty. Suddenly, a woman and a
policeman showed up. The woman kept on asking where he had hidden her
money but the man only replied, It was empty when I found it, Maam.
The woman yelled at him, Please give it back. Its for my sons school
fees. The man noticed that the woman was really sad, so he handed her all
his money. He could see that the woman was a single mother. The man said,
Take these. Im sorry for the inconvenience. The woman left and policeman
held the man for further questioning. The woman was very happy but when
she counted the money later, she found that it was double the amount she
lost; she was shocked.
On the day when the woman went to pay her sons school fees, she
noticed that a skinny man was dodging her footsteps. She thought that he
might rob her, so she approached a policeman standing nearby. He was the
same policeman whom she had taken along to find her purse. The woman
told him about the man following her when suddenly they saw the man
collapse. They ran to him and saw that he was the same man whom they had
arrested a few days back.
He looked very weak and woman was confused. The policeman said to
the woman, He didnt return your money; instead, he gave you his money that
day. He wasnt the thief but hearing about you sons school fees, he felt sad
and gave you his money.
Later, they helped man stand up, and he told the woman, Please go
ahead and pay your sons school fees, I saw you and followed you to be sure
that no one steals your sons school fees. The woman was speechless.
On seeing him, the father yelled, Why did you take all this time to
come? Dont you know that my sons life is in danger? Dont you have any
sense of responsibility?
The doctor smiled and said, I am sorry. I wasnt in the hospital and
I came as fast as I could after receiving the call and now, I wish youd
calm down so that I can do my work.
Calm down? What if your son was in this room right now? Would
you calm down? said the father angrily. The doctor smiled again and
replied, We will do our best by Gods grace and you should also pray for
your sons healthy life.
The surgery took some hours after which the doctor came out
happy, Thank God! Your son is saved! Then, without waiting for the
fathers reply, he carried on his way running while saying, If you have any
questions, ask the nurse.
A little boy went into a drug store, reached for a stool and pulled
it over to the telephone. He climbed onto the stool so that he could reach
the buttons on the phone and proceeded to punch in seven digits. The
store-owner observed and listened to the conversation.
The boy said, Lady, can you give me the job of cutting your lawn?
The woman at the other end of the phone line said, I already have
someone to cut my lawn.
Lady, I will cut your lawn for half the price of the person who
cuts your lawn now, he tried to persuade her.
Boy persevered, Lady, Ill even sweep your curb and your sidewalk,
so on Sunday you will have the prettiest lawn in all of Palm Beach, Florida.
With a smile on his face, the little boy replaced the receiver.
The store-owner, who was listening to all this, walked over to the boy and
said, Son, I like your attitude; I like that positive spirit and would like to
offer you a job.
But you were really pleading for one, the store-owner stated
feeling perplexed.
