The Fauvists
Inspired by Van Gogh, Cezanne, Seurat, and
Gauguin
Especially influenced by Gustave Moreau &
Symbolism
Founded by Henri Matisse
Color, paint, and emotion is more important
than realism
Called Fauves by a critic - meaning wild
beasts
Began in 1904 and ended 1908, had three
exhibitions
Fauvism
Put paint directly onto the canvas without
mixing
Separating color from reality - colors can
be changed and exaggerated, made
bright and bold, used to show emotion
Simplified forms
Balance and unity are important
Wild, free brushstrokes that are
expressive
The artists direct experience is the most
important thing about the painting

Born 1869, Died 1954
Mainly a painter, also a printmaker and
sculptor
Introduced to the work of Van Gogh,
which greatly influenced him
Influenced by art in Morocco, Tangiers,
and Algeria
Lifelong friend and artistic rival of
Picasso
Worked throughout his entire life, even
when bed-bound

The co-founder of Fauvism along with
Matisse
Learned to paint from a friend of
Cezanne
Painted with Matisse in the
Mediterranean
Often painted landmarks of London
Started working in darker, more muted
colors later in his career

We were always intoxicated with color, with


words that speak of color, and with the sun
that makes colors live.

Born 1877, died 1953
Known for colorful, decorative style
Uses thin washes of bright color
Most paintings show contemporary social
events
Less respected because his work was
seen as fashionable
Created one of the largest paintings ever
- La Fe lectricit for the 1937
International Exhibition in Paris
