How effective is the

combination of your main

ancillary texts?
BY CHLOE REYNOLDS
What is the recurring theme you have
developed?

The theme which I have developed throughout my promotional package

is a journey of the artists life and how she came about to make the album.
This is done through the use of colour, typography, layout and images.
Ancillary Texts

Digipak: Advert:
Images
The recurring themes here are the images as we can see the same image has been used for the
advert and the front cover of the digipak. It is clear they both have the exactly the same layout as
each other. For the viewer it is clear that the two belong together therefore, creating a brand style
for the artist.
Carrying on the theme of a journey on the inside of the digipak there is a map with pictures
reflecting the places she has been to in order to create this album. For fans this allows them to get
closer to their idol by knowing information that others wont by buying the digipak.
On the back of the digipak where there is a list of songs featured on the album the image is off a
road surrounded by trees. This I feel is very representative of the indie folk genre due to the colours
and the location of the shot but also carrying on the theme of a journey as this image symbolises
that. The image to the left of this one is of the sea which complements the front cover and the
advert which is also of the sea and again I feel is representative of the genre indie folk which
therefore, enforces the brand style of the artist.
Within the music video there is similarity of images / locations used in my digipak and advert which
reflects continuity and the fact that they all belong together to promote my artist. This was
recognised in my audience feedback.
Fonts

As we can see the fonts used throughout my ancillary products are the
same which shows continuity of the design, represents the genre indie folk
and create a brand style for my artist. The fonts which I used within my
advert are MV Boli, papyrus and calibri. The inspiration of these fonts
came from existing indie folk magazines and the website dafont. I chose
them because I feel they are very representative of the genre and this will
allow fans to identify her unique style and brand identity.
Colour

For the front cover of my advert and digipak I wanted to create something that
represented the genre but most importantly something that would catch my audiences
eye. As the original image was rather plane so I decided to put a purple filter on the
image to improve it. The link of this colour between all of my ancillary products is that
within the video after the girl wakes up she is in a purple dress, then with the purple filter
on the images on my advert and digipak. The colour of font is white in order to stand
out against the backgrounds in my advert and digipak. I feel this complements the
overall image of my promotional package as a whole. The colours on the other to
images in my digipak I feel are naturalistic and represent the genre indie folk but also
creates an atmospheric feeling for my audience which is also how they feel when the
watch the video.
Overall Effect:

In conclusion I feel that the overall design of my product was a success as the images complement
each other, there is a recurring theme of a journey, the font used, images and colour throughout all
of my ancillary products. The photoshoot for my advert and digipak was on the same day as my last
shoot for my music video therefore, this creates a sense of coherence about the products for my
audience. I feel that the style of my image on the front cover of my ancillary products is quite
contemporary and unusual but is very conventional of the genre due to what the image is off.
Therefore, this then appeals to my target audience. Keeping them in mind I didnt make my advert
too cluttered of text but I put enough on there I feel that is worth the cost of the digipak. As some
people may want to read about the artist but I feel as a person within this target group I would
rather see more visual elements of the artist instead. However, I did create a website where if some
of my target audience want to find out more then they have that opportunity to do so due to them
being active and the advances in technology.
Within my audience feedback I received they thought it looked very professional as a whole to
promote my artist and suited the genre indie folk.
