John L Dawson

John is consultant with over thirty years experience in


corrosion, corrosion control, failure investigation,
monitoring / inspection and corrosion management in
the oil and gas industry. He has been involved in
onshore and offshore projects in the North Sea, the
Middle East and Russia as well as civil engineering
projects on reinforced earth / concrete and marine
structures, including the Channel Tunnel.

He was awarded a Ph D for research into corrosion of


lead alloys having first worked in the electrowinning /
process industry and in research into batteries / fuel
cells, before an appointment as a lecturer in Chemical
Engineering at UMIST, researching electrochemical
engineering, mass transfer and corrosion. He became a lecturer in Corrosion
Science & Engineering in 1974 where he supervised some 30 PhD projects and 50
M.Sc. Dissertations and Theses. He was awarded the Beilby Medal of the Institute of
Metals in 1979 for work on corrosion monitoring.

Since resigning as an academic in 1989 Dr Dawson has been employed full-time as


an independent corrosion consultant. He has acted as an expert witness in public
enquiries into pipelines and developed corrosion management documentation for the
UK Health & Safety Executive. He was an expert witness on Corrosion Management
into the fire and explosion at South Humberside Refinery on 16th April 2001.

For the past 15 years he has developed industrial based courses in the oil and gas
industry on corrosion, corrosion control and corrosion management to the oil and
pipeline industries, clients have included Saudi Aramco, PDO and IBC, as well as the
water industry and British Energy. He also contributed modules on condition based
maintenance of stationary equipment as part of the MSc course on Asset
Management and Maintenance Engineering at the University of Manchester.

He was a major author to the European Federation of Corrosion Document Number


39 on Oilfield Inhibition and is the author of the Corrosion Management Overview
and co-author of 5 other reviews in the 4th Volume of Shriers Corrosion, published
by Elsevier in 2010, including Corrosion Management in the Oil & Gas Industry.
