Physical Education Philosophy

My unit plan is built around my philosophy that physical education should be

enjoyable, engaging and inclusive to all students. As a physical educator I want to
inspire my students to be physically active for their entire life and I believe this
comes from intrinsically motivating your students. I want to create a classroom
environment that is safe physically and emotionally, where students will have fun
and become physically literate.

Physical activity needs to be gear in a fun and enjoyable manner for students
to be motivated and excited about what you are teaching. If a student perceives a
particular activity not enjoyable they will not want to participate. I believe a big part
of this is have students learn through games but there comes a point where specific
skills need to be polished through particular technical drills. I want to try and
disguise these technique drill based classes in small mini games where students are
actively working on their skill but receiving more enjoyment out of the process.
Students acquire skills throws games and social interaction with each other.

I want to establish realistic and achievable goals within my physical education

classroom. These goals need to be challenging so that they promote self-growth
within the student and will ultimately lead to an increase in their motivation. Having
unrealistic goals can discourage students and perhaps lead to being turned off to
the idea of physical activity. By establishing goals I believe it is imperative they I set
aside time for self-reflection, where students can self-assess their own growth and
analyze what aspects of their physical activity they need to improve to reach their
goals.

Finally safety is the most important aspect of my philosophy. Students need to

feel safe physically and emotionally in my classroom, this will also help foster
intrinsic motivation because if the students are safe they are able to focus on
physical activity. I will ensure that all students are educated in the aspects of spatial
awareness, proper use of equipment and proper skill execution. As to the emotional
stance, I will have a zero-tolerance policy for bully in my class. I want to create a
classroom where if a student falls down other students will rally around that student
to pick them back up. Cooperation with one another is a key aspect of physical
education and why that it is a General Learning outcome in our Program of studies.

In this Badminton unit students will be graded on the GLOs of Activity,

Cooperation and Do it Daily. Student will be graded on their skill level in the
categories of serves, over head clears, smashes, drives, and a double tournament.
The way students interact with each other, display teamwork, and show etiquette of
the game will be taken into consideration. Finally students will be graded on their
participation, the more student participate the more likely they are going to engage
in physical activity for the rest of their life.

Students will be assessed a total of 3 times over the period of 5 classes. The
first classes students will fill out a survey where they record their own perceive skill
level and aspects of badminton that they would like to improve on. Secondly,
students will be graded on a skills competition involving serves and a variety of
other skills. Finally, students will be assessed in a summative tournament where
things like etiquette, rule knowledge and skill will be evaluated.

Classroom Management

Classroom management is a pivotal aspect of a physical education class due

to the high-energy nature of physical activity. A teacher needs to have effective
classroom management so that transitions between activities go smoothly, this
ensures that students are maximizing the time that they are being physically active.
I plan on having effective classroom management by having detailed lesson plans,
being prepared before class and having creative activities. I will also do my best to
get to know my students on a personal level because I believe that being intuitive
with your students is an important aspect of classroom management. If you know
you have a group of students who just are not engaged in your lesson you might
change it up to something you know they enjoy. A class that is enjoying your
activities is going to be attentive and your classroom management will flourish from
that.

As soon as kids come into the gym I will have a single birdie set up on each
court, as students role into the gym I will take there attendance and they will be
permitted to rally until everyone has arrived to the class. Establishing this routine
will give students more time to play, something constructive to engage in, and help
with my classroom management. Student will then know that once everyone is
attended for to take the appropriate actions to perform the warm up for that day. By
establishing this routine students will have a tentative guide for the first 10 minutes
of the class.
I will incorporate music into the warm-up when applicable to help foster a fun
atmosphere that students are engaged in. All songs will be appropriate for the
classroom and perhaps even themed like a Throwback Thursday or Top 40 Hits.
At the beginning of the class I will go over the tentative schedule I have
created. Having students know a basic idea of what is going to happen in the class
will allow them to process what is going to happen and help create smoother
transitions.

At the beginning of the unit students will fill out a personal survey on what
types of activities they enjoy, this will allow my self to get a better understanding of
the student. From the survey I will be able to establish if any students participate in
other sports where I can go and watch. To ensure I foster positive relationships with
my students Ill take time at the beginning of every class to ask how they are and
take interest in their personal lives.

Motivation will be increase through a multitude of activities. As mentioned

above music will be an external motivator for student, I believe that using music is
an extremely effective way to increase overall motivation. I want to focus on
teaching games from understanding and allowing students to have more touches,
further increasing their motivation. I also want to incorporate energized
introductions that will excite students at the beginning of class about the lesson.
