Objectives:
Students should be able to:
1. Understand and explain American culture and its components.
2. Explain the controversy over the rise of self-fulfillment as a cultural value.

Activities
1. Classroom discussion: Do you agree with the list of American values? What
would you add or subtract from the list? Why? (New list will be written up on
the smartboard, whatever is added must be explained for its reasoning.)
2. Section 3 Assessment from textbook.
3. Pick 4 values from those discussed as being part of American culture and
write a paragraph about each and explain how you feel about those values,
whether positive or negative
4. Get with a partner and come up with your own list of culture values, at least
5, and explain why you chose these values.

1. Name and describe 5 of the 15 American values identified by the sociologist


Robin M. Williams.

2. In your own words explain how the American values of equality and
democracy are linked.

3. In what ways might one of Williams other core values that help to define
American culture, racial and group superiority, conflict with some, pick at
least 3, of his other 15 traditional American values?

4. Do you think that each of these values reflect practical concerns, idealism, or
a little bit of both?
