FINAL PAPER

Due by midnight on Wednesday, 26th April

Your final writing assignment is a 5-6 page paper (1600-1800 words) on a topic of your
choice, based on a text or artwork (or both) that we have studied together in LH2.

Choosing your topic:

You might want to frame your paper in terms of a larger issue or an ideological, theoretical or
aesthetic set of concerns that we have examined throughout the course (e.g. gender, colonialism,
war), or you might choose to do a close comparative reading of a particular place (e.g. Paris,
London, Shanghai, etc.). You could also examine how the same topic or problem is addressed
across different media. There are many possibilities, so please dedicate some time to
conceptualizing your topic and try to choose something that really
impressed/perplexed/surprised/inspired you this semester. As with the first and second papers, it
is very important that your essay is thesis-driven and that it makes an original argument of some
depth and complexity about works that have made an impact on you.

Your paper must include:

An original argument
Close visual and/or textual analysis
Engagement with at least two different works by different artists/authors
Proper formatting and citation of sources

If you have questions about ANY of these required elements, please see me about it. You are
also STRONGLY encouraged to make use of the Writers Centre.

Although this is not mandatory, I highly recommend that you send me a one-page proposal of
your paper no later than Monday, April 17th. Your proposal should include:

A description of your topic

A statement of your potential thesis
A list of any secondary sources that you anticipate consulting

Above all, I ask that you be creative, write about something you care about, and make an
argument that matters! Finally, take enough pride in your final paper to leave time for careful
editing and revisions.
