4.

4 Since there is a small variation in the soaked CBR value so an average value of laboratory
CBR 5.16% is to be taken for the purpose of determining the total crust thickness of flexible
pavement of the road under investigation.
5. COMPUTATION OF THE DESIGN TRAFFIC PARAMETERS:-
5.1 The traffic intensity has been calculated on the guideline for the low volume roads as per
IRC: SP: 72-2015.
5.2 The department had collected and supplied the traffic data in the year of traffic count is 125
having two harvesting seasons.
5.3 Assuming 50% of the harvesting season, so the Average Daily Traffic during the non-
harvesting season = 125/2 = 63
1.2 x 63 x 75
AADT = 63+ 365 = 63+ 15.53 = 78.53 say 79

Assuming 6% growth rate before two years while road is opened to traffic.
AADT = 79+(1+0.06)2 = 88.76 say 89
The following traffic data supplied by the field is as under:-
Car, jeep = 38, L.C.V = 36 and two wheelers = 4
Heavy commercial Vehicles (HCV):-
Trucks> laden = 8, unladen = 5
Agri. Tractor> laden 18, unladen 16
From the given traffic data, the proportion 89 works out by taking the VDF values as under:-
8
HCV laden = 8, x 89 = 5.70 say 6.0
125

5
Unladen = 5, x 89 = 3.56 say 4.0
125

18
MCV laden 18, x 89 = 12.82 say 13.0
125

16
Unladen, 16, x 89 = 11.40 say 11.0
125

Total commercial vehicles per day for design purposes = 34

Taking the VDF values from para 3.4.4 of IRC:SP:72-2015, the ESAL application per day
worked out to be 20.96
= 6x2.58+4x0.31+13x0.31+11x0.019 = 20.96

Cummutative ESAL over 10 years i.e @ 6% growth rate as:-

=20.96x4811=100839
So 100839 falls in traffic category of T4 i.e which falls in the cumulative ESAL application of
100000 to 200000
5.4 For cumulative ESAL application of 100839 which falls in traffic category range of 100000
to 200000 and against CBR value of 5 to 6, a total crust thickness of 300mm including
bituminous surface may be provided as per pavement design catalogue of IRC SP 72-2015.
6. RECOMMENDTAIONS FOR THE CONST. OF MOORANG GRAMMING THOWARING
ROAD.
6.1 The following specification has been recommended for the const. of Moorang Gramming
Thowaring Raod for the design of flexible pavement.
REACH INVESTIGATED KM 0/00 to 5/100:-
1. G.S.B having a single compacted layer of thickness = 150 mm
150 mm
2. W.B.M grade II ( 63-45)mm having a single compacted =75 mm
layer of thickness 75mm
3. W.B.M Grade III ( 22.5-53) having a single compacted =75 mm
layer of thickness 75 mm. ----------------
Total = 300 mm
6.2 For surfacing and sealing wearing course, a suitable layer of open graded premix carpet
(PMC) having a compacted thickness of 20 mm with seal coat may be provided at the top of the
pavement for the smoothness of the road.
6.3 Comprehensive drainage measure both across and longitudinal may be provided so as to
mitigate the effect of water due to rain/snow fall over the entire reach of the road.
