Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank FAQ

Question: What does the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank do?

Answer: The Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank distributes almost 2 million pounds of food a month to residents in

need of a meal across the Greater Pittsburgh area. We deliver fresh local foods donated by various partners and

donors. These donors include farms, wholesalers, and restaurants, including federal, state and local government.

Q: What is the goal of the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank?

A: Our mission is to feed people in need and mobilize our community to eliminate hunger. We are a proud

member of Feeding America. Our vision is a hunger-free southwestern Pennsylvania.

Q: How many people in the Pittsburgh area go hungry?

A: There are many different populations of people that are affected by hunger in Pennsylvania. Some of these

populations include senior citizens, children, veterans, rural residents, and working Pennsylvanians. Without

proper nutrition, citizens suffer from various deficiencies and illnesses.

Q: How long has the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank been serving the Pittsburgh area?

A: We have been serving the Pittsburgh area since we opened in June, 1980 in the Hill District. The original

warehouse we occupied was donated by St. Vincent de Paul.

Q: What can I do to help?

A: There are many different options for helping at the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank. One can donate money, or

volunteer at one of our many programs or events.
