KSA #3: The purposes of the Guide to Education and programs of study for

subject disciplines you teach. Know how to use these documents to inform
and direct your planning, instruction and assessment of student progress.

So much of what we teach in the music room is a continuation of what the

students have learned in the previous years. When I use the program of studies
to guide my planning I always look at what skills are carried over from previous
years and use scaffolding in my lessons. The program of studies is set up in an
excellent way to assist teachers in scaffolding their lessons throughout different
grades.

Above is an excerpt from the program of studies. I think that this is an invaluable
resource. The ledger shows the teachers what is required to teach, the lever the
concept or skill is introduced, and the grades in which you continue to develop
the skill. There are so many creative ways teachers can use the program of
studies to guide their teaching and students learning. I feel like this semester I
really got to know and understand the program of studies and I am excited to
learn more about it and have it guide my teaching practices.
