2. Plants are already used in the production of biofuels. Research some

examples and list two plants used in North America to produce fuel.

We use sugar cane and corn to produce cellulosic biomass, a type of biofuel that produces
ethanol. We also use soybeans for a replacement for oil.

2. Briefly explain why algae cells are green. Be sure to explain which colors
from the electromagnetic spectrum are essential for algae growth.
- Basically, photosynthesis depends on the
absorption of light by the pigments that are
in the algae leaves. Chlorophyll is the most
important pigment that absorbs energy. The
picture represents the absorption of the light
by chlorophyll. The only electromagnetic

can see with this graph that the two colours that are essential for algae growth are
blue and red.

2. According to your observations, which cell organelle contains lipids? Verify

your answer by researching information online.

I would say Vacuoles. Source: Tania and my instincts. Research were far from conclusive.

2. Briefly research how a fluorescent microscope works. Explain how this type
of microscope is of great interest for identifying oil in cells.

The fluorescent microscopy uses a laser as the light source. It is used to observe cellular
structures that are auto fluorescent. The light travels differently in a fluorescent
microscope, it goes from beyond where the light beam is emitted, it is reflected on a cube
to adjust the wavelength to excite the fluorescent molecules, it is directed through the
objective to reach the sample where after it touches the sample, the light is reflected
through the cube again to filter it before reaching the eye. Because light comes in so
many colors, scientists can look at multiple dyes in the same sample, if their excitation
and emission wavelengths are not the same. It is of great interest to use a microscope
with fluorescence for our algae cells because the glycerol became bright green with the
Bodipy.
