THE ETHNIC MAP OF A PORTION OF OLD SERBIA

ACCORDING TO A TRAVEL ACCOUNT BY
MILO S. MILOJEVI, 18711877

Summary

The ethnic map of a part of Old Serbia at a scale of 1:300.000 refers to a part
of the historic Old Serbia, particularly Kosovo and Metohia, with the addition of the
Kurumlija nahiya (district). It is based on three volumes of travelogues by Milo S.
Milojevi, who traveled through this area in the 19th century - at the end of 1860s
and the beginning of 1870s. The map clearly shows the ethnic picture at that time by
national and religious affiliation, through the composition and distribution of the
population by settlements. It also shows the demographic-statistical structure of
Serbs and Albanians immediately prior to the Serbian-Turkish wars of 1876 and

1877/78, at a time when the Serbs were still the majority population in the area of
Kosovo and Metohia, and the Albanians a minority.
Beside the direct effect of revisiting the ethnic-demographic situation in that
part of Serbia from almost 150 years ago, this map also verifies and reemphasizes
the originality, straightforwardness, synchronicity, richness, complexity, multidi-
mensionalism and other values of Milojevi's travelogue, which has been somewhat
unfairly neglected and even contested in our historiography. This paper represents an
interpretation of the results of the author's cartographic work.
