Proprioceptive Input

Obstacle Course with Crab Walking

Idea by Victor D. Rivera

This activity provides proprioceptive input by using a crab-walk. In addition, the

child is working on perception of movement and balance.

Materials:

Ball, Boxes, Chalk, Masking Tape

Skills that are targeted:

Balance, Motor Planning, Ocular Control, and Proprioception

Description of activity:
Set up goals apart as room allows using the boxes, the masking tape, or the chalk.
Instruct the child to assume a crab-walk position.
Assume a similar position.

Each one of you needs to try to get the ball to the goal by bumping it with your
body or kicking it with your foot.
Hands may not be used.
Upgrade: Carry an item (pillow, book, towel, etc) on belly as child does the crab
walk.
Downgrade: Child can just squat down and walk using their hands to simulate
pincers. This helps with children that have balance issues.
