Key Words with Definitions

Analogy = how things are similar


cause/effect = how one or more events (actions) will result in an
outcome
compare = to look for similarities
contrast = to look for differences
describe = tell more about, use details
express = to say or tell
generalize = the basic idea
summarize = the main points
variable = a symbol that represents some number X or Y is the most
common
fiction = fake or made up stories
non-fiction = not fake, true stories
consecutive = in order Example: 3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10
persuade = to convince someone
evaluate (in math) = solve the problem
chronological = arranged in the order of time
evidence = to prove or disprove something; proof
predict = what will happen next
infer = to read in between the lines. Example: You have a blue note.
infer You didnt do your homework.
equation = a number sentence that says two expressions. *Will have an
equal sign.
Example: 5 + X = 8
Demonstrate = to show that you know
Sum = the answer to an addition problem
Difference= the answer to a subtraction problem
less than = subtract
product = the answer to a multiplication problem
quotient = the answer to a division problem

paraphrase = rewrite or say in your own words


revise= recheck/ change it
relate = to tell
analyze = study
interpret = make it clear/simple
distinguish= compare/ point out the differences
clarify = to make clear/ simplify
illustrate = to make clear using an example
apply = using what you know or have/ put to use
validate = prove its true (writing)
justify = show its true (math)
