Global Citizen Essay

The Ambassador School of Global Leadership has strong visions and missions for our

students. ASGLs vision is to prepare students to become college and career ready and

satisfactorally global. ASGLs mission is to strive to raise awareness of global issues through

conversation and subjection. Our school also has the four guiding principles which are listen

from the heart, global citizens consider and respect different perspectives, be honest with

yourself and others, and seek positive solutions and take action. Being a global citizen will

benefit my future.

So what does it mean to be a global citizen? Global citizens are aware of not just what is

happening in their surroundings, but what is going on around the globe; someone that

participates in and contributes to the community from locally to globally, and willing to act to

make the world a better place. Some examples of global citizens today are power couple Brad

Pitt and Angelina Jolie. They involve in several philanthropic activities. Jolie is widely known

for her work as an ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The

couple are strong supporters of same-sex marriage, and continue to grow their family of a mix of

adopted and biological children. Tim Tebow is another example of a global citizen. Although

hes a major football star, he makes time to help out in the world. In 2011, CURE and the Tebow

Foundation announced their plan to build a childrens hospital in the Philippines, which was the

country he was born in, and raised money for a pediatric cancer center to give disadvantaged
children a chance to go to Disneyland. Although jocks are considered as snooty and jerk-like,

Tebow is a team player and has a big heart.

I feel that I am becoming a global citizen right now because I attend a global affiliated

school and I contribute to the community. By attending ASGL, we blend in global icons into our

learning. We also have the Global Performance Outcomes which are: investigate the world,

communicate ideas, recognize perspectives, and take action. I represent these GPOs through

everyday activites For example, in my 10th English class, we read about different types of

governments in countries like North Korea, Cuba, the United States, Denmark, and Sweden, and

we compare and contrast by reading articles, writing paragraphs, and sharing with our peers. I

contribute to the community by participating in a program at a church in the USC campus called

Peace Kids and Youth Leadership. In the program, the kids learn about different cultures and

study issues related to justice and peace in the world, and the kids engage creatively with the

concept of peace through music, art, games, writing and other fun activities, and are able to

recieve tutoring by USC students. I am currently a youth intern and will become an assistant

teacher in the program once I become 18.

As an adult, I see myself becoming a better global citizen because I will be more mature

than I am now and go to college with a large diversity of students and global standards. Studying

abroad is something I would like to do as an adult. By studying abroad, studying and living in

another country for a semester or two would be great to see what being in another country is like.

Being a global citizen can mean many things, but the main things are being a team player,

contributing to the community, and try to make the world a better place. I admit that I feel as if

some of our students dont care about the world and are just forced to come to this school, but we
should try to motivate them to participate in school events and activities so that ASGL has 100%

of student commitment.
