Workability:
Workability:
Workability of concrete generally implies
the ease with which mix can be handled from
the mixer to its finally compacted shape. the
measurements of the workability Of fresh
concrete is of importance in assisting the
practicability of compacting the mix and also in
maintaining consistency throughout the job. In
addition , workability testes are often used as an
indirect check on the water content and
therefore on the water/cement ratio of concrete.
Workability should be distinguished from
consistency which term as used in concrete
practice, relates to the degree of wetness of
concrete. On the other hand, consistency has to
do with the force flow relationship alone.
A job starts with the mix just right
cement and aggregate are measured, the right
amount of water is add, and mixing is then
carried out for the given time.
A batch of concrete wetter than the rest
will mean the batch of concrete that is weaker
and less durable in the finished job . a job batch
that is too dry will lead to difficulties in placing,
compacting and finishing .

2 ATOOMUS
There are five tests widely used for the
determination of the fresh concrete workability :
1. Slump test.
2. Compacting factor test.
3. Vebe consistometer test.
4. Flow test.

S lump ttest
Slump est

Objective:

To calculate the slump value, and to know

more about the workability, and fresh concrete .

Introduction:

The slump test is used vary often

In concrete work. It is easily performed at a job
site and is useful in detecting variations in
mixes of given properties.
The slump test cone is placed on a
smooth , level surface with the smaller opening
at the top. It is filled in three layers of equal
volume , each of , which is compacted 25 times
with a standard rod having a hemispherical tip .
the rod is then struck off, and the cone is slowly
lifted and set beside the unsupported concrete.

3 ATOOMUS
The rod is laid across the cone and a measure
of the distance from the bottom of the rod to the
average top of the concrete is taken .

A vary stiff mix will have near zero slump.

Lean mixes tend to be harsh and slumps can
vary from true to shear in different sample of the
same mixes.
The same slump can be recorded for concrete
of different workability , depending on the
aggregate
Used . the slump test is not a true determination
of workability , but it is a useful for on-site
checks of variations in material or mixing
condition.
There are three main type of slump :
1. True slump.
2. Shear slump .
3. Collapse.

Standard:

ASTM :C143
B.S: 1882 part 2
Apparatus :

4 ATOOMUS
1. Slump mould .
2. Temping rod .
3. A several type of aggregate.
4. A Portland cements.
5. A clean water.
6. Trowel.
Calculation :

Wt. Of coarse aggregate : 6000 g

Wt. Of (3daceih) aggregate : 6000 g
Wt. Of swieleh sand : 3000 g
Wt. Of cement : 3000 g
Water : 3000 mL .
*** water/cement ratio = (W/C) = 0.5
*** water/aggregate ratio = (W/A) = 9%
*** Slump type : shear slump.
*** Slump value : 9 cm .

Results :
Finally we have shear slump, and
a slump value equal to (9 cm) .

Discussion and conclusion:

After we made the test, we get shear slump

of value equal to : ( 9 cm ).
This test vary easy to use in project to
calculate the slump, but it is not a true
determination of workability.
This test learnt us about mixing the
concrete, and the amount used especially in big
project.

Note: this test not use in lean mix . why ?
: isnt true determination for workability but
is good in site .
