Laboratory Report
ACTIVITY 3: DETERMINATION OF ASF CLAY TO

FOUNDRY SAND

Performed by:

Al Ignatius F. Mabolis

Submitted to:

Prof. Nadzmi S. Sayadi

INTRODUCTION

OBJECTIVE

To determine the AFS clay content of a foundry sand sample.

MATERIAL/APPARATUS

Oven (up to 110 C)

Mettler balance

Mechanical stirrer

Vacuum pump

Graduated cylinder, 500 ml

Volumetric flask, 1000 ml

Metal pan

Beaker or jar, 1 liter

Ruler

NaOH

Distilled water

Foundry sand, 1 kg

PROCEDURES

The following procedures were observed throughout the experiment:

Obtain a 50 gram sample using standard sampling methods and dry the sample for one

hour in the oven at 105-110 C

Weigh the dried sand and put it in a one liter capacity beaker or jar. Add 475 ml of

distilled water and 25 ml of standard NaOH solution

Stir the mixture using mechanical agitator for 5 minutes to liberate clay particles from the

sand grains. Wash the sand off the stirrer into the jar and fill with distilled water to a

height of 6 inches above the bottom of the jar. Allow settling for 10 minutes and then
siphon off 5 inch of superheated water. Add water again filling to the 6 inch height and

stir the sediments on the bottom. After settling for exactly 5 minutes, siphon off 5 inches

of water, Repeat the process of 5 minute standing and siphoning until the water is clear to

a depth of 5 inches at the end of the 5 minutes period.

Dry and weigh the remaining grains. The difference between the dried grains and that of

the original sand sample represents the AFS clay, express AFS clay as a percentage of the

50 gram sample.
