McAfee, MD Paul C. "Types of Scoliosis Braces." Spine-health. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Mar. 2017.

Braces can vary in how pressure is applies to the spine and ribs to prevent a scoliosis
curve from progressing.
Some rigid braces require full-time wear, which is typically between 16 and 23 hours a
day, whereas others are only worn about 8 to 10 hours per night while sleeping
Some of the most common full-time braces include Boston, Wilmington, and Milwaukee
braces
The most commonly prescribes brace for scoliosis today is the Boston brace.
The Boston brace is also known as a type of TLSO (thoracic-lumbar-sacral orthosis)
Other types of Boston braces include models that exist, such as a CTLSO (TLSO with a
neck extension) for a high thoracic curve.
Boston braces works by applying corrective pressure on the convex (outer) side of the
curve and cutting out corresponding areas of relief on the concave (inner) side of the
curve so the spine can migrate in that direction
Boston brace opens in the back to help getting into and out of it
Wilmington braces are another common TLSO
Unlike the Boston brace, the Wilmington brace is custom-fitted based on a cast taken of
the patient while lying down, facing up.
After the cast is made, corrective forced specific to the patients spinal curve are added
before the brace is completed.
The Milwaukee brace is the original (cervico-thoracic-lumbar-sacral-orthosis) CTLSO
invented in the 1940s, is an older and bulkier brace.
Due to the effectiveness and relative convenience of todays more modern braces, the
Milwaukee brace is rarely being used anymore.
Milwaukee braces are still used for curves higher in the thoracic or cervical spine
Doctors prescribe scoliosis braces for one in five adolescents who have the condition. As
a result, an estimated 30,000 children are wedged into braces each year.
Despite the fact that scoliosis bracing has existed for centuriesand has been considered
the standard surgery prevention tactic since the modern brace was invented in the 1940s
theres little evidence to support its effectiveness.
The TLSO brace is the most commonly worn scoliosis brace in the United States. In the
study mentioned above, 68 percent of brace-wearing patients used one
The most popular of these bracing systems, the Boston brace, originated in 1972 at the
Boston Childrens Hospital. Developed by Dr. John Hall and William Miller, it was the
first scoliosis brace to eliminate the need for a metal superstructure
This source could be summarized by its in-depth knowledge of the different types of braces
used in the world of medicine of scoliosis.
