PBS BAND 5
Tema D Management and Continuity Of Life

Bab 9 Stability

Topik 9.1 Understanding that the centre of gravity affects stability

Band 5 Mengamal dan menilai maklumat saintifik untuk menyiasat luas tapak dan
kedudukan pusat gravity terhadap kestabilan objek mengikut prosedur yang betul
dan bersistematik.

1. An object is said to be stable if it is steady and well balanced so that when it is

pushed slightly it does not topple or fall off easily. Let us try to do a simple
experiment or derive the conditions for stability.

When give a slight push to the vases. You will notice that the vase in
situation A topples down while the vase in situation B remains back to the
original position

A B

(a) Suggest one hypothesis to investigate the above statement.

(b) Using two corks, three needles and a other suitable apparatus, describe one
experiment to test the hypothesis in 1(a).

Your description should include the following criteria:

i. Aim of the experiment

ii. Problem statement
iii. Identification of variables
iv. List of apparatus and materials
v. Procedure and diagram
vi. Observation
vii. discussion
viii. Conclusion

SAMPLE REPORT

Aim of the experiment

Problem statement

Hypothesis

Variables

Apparatusand materials

Procedure and
diagrams

Observation
1. Which model will topples first?
Give inference.
Discussion 2. State the relationship between the base area
and the stability of the model.

Is your hypothesis acceptable?

Conclusion Rewrite your hypothesis.

2. As the centre of gravity( C.G.) of a body is raised the body becomes more unstable.
This is because when the body is tilted the vertical line drawn from the C.G. falls
outside the base.

The extra passengers are not allowed to be on the upper deck of a bus. If they
are allowed to stand in the upper deck the C.G will be raised and the bus will
be more unstable when it takes a sharp turn.
