Camp Towards Excellence STKK 2016 (Fasa II)

Science Module PT3 (Set A 1)

1. Tap water contains dissolved substances (solutes) in it. The amount and
type of dissolved substances depend on where you live. This is one of the
reasons why tap water tastes different in the different areas. You can find
out how much solute is dissolved in water by pouring a small amount into
a glass and allowing it to evaporate. The white ring or scale left behind in
theglass contains minerals that were dissolved in the water. Water that
contains a lot of dissolved substances is called hard water, while water
that contains very few dissolved substances is called soft water.

a) Phang had a fish tank. As the water evaporated, she would add more
water. She noticed a line of white scale on the inside of the fish tank where
the water evaporated.
Explain Phangs observation.

(ii) Rain water is the purest form of water among all natural sources. Yet it
usually contains dissolved gases, microorganisms and dust. Based on the
statement, state two processes of purification of water so that the water is
safe for use.

(b) It is important to have good drinking water. Water found underground is

referred to as ground water. Give reasons why there is less pollution by
bacteria and particles in ground water than in water from surface sources
such as river and sea.

2. A student wants to investigate the absorption of heat by different surfaces.

The following is the procedure of the investigation:
2 metal sheets with different colours (black and dull, white and shiny) are
placed in the sunlight.
The metal sheets are left in the sunlight for 4 hours.
The temperatures of the metal sheets are measured after 4 hours

metal sheet (black, dull) metal heet (white, shiny)

2
The table below shows the results of the investigation:
Metal sheets Temperature after 4 hours(C)
Black and dull surfaces 69
White and shiny surface 30

(a) What do you think about the reult of the investigation?

(c) The student repeated the investigation by replacing the white and shiny surface with a black
and rough surface.
The result is then recorded in the table below.
Metal sheets Temperature after 4 hours(C)
Black and dull surfaces
Black and rough surface

Predict the temperature of the black and rough surface after 4 hours. Give your opinion on why it
happens.
