Small Group Instruction:

Mini Lesson Topic Context Clues

Materials Context clue cards, 2 worksheets/activities

Connection I asked the students what they could tell me

about context clues, and what they are. I do
this to activate any prior knowledge.

Explicit Instruction I will tell the students that we will be working

on context clues.
Then for the I do part of this lesson I model
what the students will be doing with the first
worksheet. I do the first two problems by
showing them how to circle the context clues
within the sentence that help define the
definition.

Guided Practice As a group we will go through the first

worksheet together. I will lead the students
through the sentences and at each one I will
give them a moment to reflect on their
answer. I will also have them turn and talk
with each other, and when everyone is ready
we will discuss the answers all together. I will
ask them questions asking what clues lead
them to the answer.

Independent Practice Here the students will be able to try out the
activity independently. When they are finished
we will then discuss the activity together and I
have them explain to me their answers and
reasonings.

Group Wrap Up I will ask students what they thought of the

lesson, and if they have a good idea about
context clues.
Also, I will use this opportunity to go back to
the context clues flashcards and practice
those until time is up for our group. We will be
discussing the answers as we go.
