Artifact: Diversity

I plan to get to know my students'

backgrounds and interests to celebrate his or
her culture, and incorporate that in my class
activities. I like using Project Based Learning
(PBL) activities to provide students with real-
world experiences where they can learn by
doing. It also fosters collaboration and
community (UDL).
I taught Spanish in urban Detroit,
Michigan for seven consecutive years and I
know that poverty, low income family students,
less budget funding, outdated books, or not
enough books, and safety issues, are some of
the characteristics of urban education
challenges along with inter-social treatment.
The needs come in different forms and social
justice is one of them.
We must not let the lack of equity in a city
prevent students from achieving their best
educational potential. I remember resources
were low, but with the help of parents, we
could plan yearly, the celebration of Cinco de
Mayo and special field trips to Spanish Town in
Detroit which fostered collaboration and
community (UDL). It also promoted classroom
culture, socialization, relationships, and a
sense of community. Having a positive
relationship between parents, students, and
the community matters. The sense of
community during my experience mattered. It
was one of the best experiences of my life,
despite its challenges. There were different
socioeconomic backgrounds within the
classroom. However, students needs were
met because I encountered a great, helpful,
loving community. They made a difference in
helping students succeed despite
circumstances by working together. I look for
what we have in common in our ethnicity to
connect with each other. After all, I am a
walking example of diversity.
