PP Hirarc Project
This project represents about the study of safety and health assessment in Coca-Cola Bottlers
in Bandar Enstek, Nilai. In the soft drink production process, accidents might be happened
unintended. Hence the objective of the project is to control and prevent the accident from
happening by carried out the risk assessment based on the Guidelines for Hazard
Identification, Risk Assessment and Risk Control (HIRARC) methodology and engineering
control approach. As expected, the control measure will be minimizing the risk level and
hope can be implement by related
industry
Introduction
The Coca-Cola Company is worlds largest beverage company and is the leading producer
and marketer of soft drinks. Today, Coca-Cola is consumed throughout the world at the rate
of more than 600 million times per day and this figure is continuing rise. Coca-Cola began
selling in 1886, when Dr John S Pemberton charged customers just five cents a bottle. Since
then weve become the worlds leading soft drinks manufacturer with more than 700,000
employees and 500 brands.
In Malaysia, the Coca-Cola system manufactures, markets and distributes over 20 products
including sparkling beverages (Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite, A&W, Schweppes), zero-calorie
sparkling beverages (Coke light, Coke zero), juice drinks (Minute Maid Pulpy), teas (Heaven
and Earth), isotonics (Aquarius) and water (Dasani).
The Coca-Cola Bottlers (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd is one of the subsidiary of the Coca-Cola
Company which is located in Bandar Enstek, Nilai. The company was founded in 2009 and
the main activity of the companys is manufacturing of flavoring extracts, syrups, powders,
and related products. The Coca-Cola Bottler which served as a production hub which
involved in many manufacturing and machining process. Employee or workers in the in the
manufacturing plant have to take care the production line by keeping all the machine
operating in well manner.
The study focus on the safety and health assessment in their production line which may cause
issues which are hazardous to safety, health and environment. In the process of producing the
soft drinks which involve in different kind of heavy duty machine that may cause harm and
risk to their employee.
The purpose of study is to carry out HIRARC to identify all the factors that may cause harm
to employees and other related person. The HIRARC activities planned and conducted for
situation where hazard appear to pose significant threat and help to improve OSH
Management System.
Hazard Identification
Hazards exists in every workplace that come in different forms and need to be identified.
Hence, the purpose of hazard identification is to highlight the critical operations of tasks, that
is, those tasks posing significant risks to the health and safety of employees and related
persons. Hazards can be divided into three main groups, health hazards, safety hazards, and
environmental hazards.
In this project, we have had identified the hazards in the overall process at the Coca-Cola
Bottlers production line based on the Guideline for Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment
and Risk Control (HIRARC) by Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH),
Malaysia in year of 2008.
As an engineer, we have the responsibility to use the engineering approach or work practice
control to eliminate hazards. In this project we applied the 4 simple steps based on the
guideline for HIRARC in Appendix 4; (1) Classify Work Activities; (2) Hazard
Identifications; (3) Risk Assessments; (4) Risk Controls.
Health Hazards
An occupational health hazard is any agent that can cause illness to an individual. A health
hazard may produce serious and immediate (acute) affects, or may cause long-term (chronic)
problems. All or part of the body may be affected. Someone with an occupational illness may
not recognize the symptoms immediately. For example, noise-induced hearing loss is often
difficult for the affected individual to detect until it is well advanced. Health Hazards include
chemicals (such as battery acid and solvents), biological hazards (such as bacteria, viruses,
dusts and molds), physical agents (energy sources strong enough to harm the body, such as
electric currents, heat, light, vibration, noise and radiation) and work design (ergonomic)
hazards.
Mostly food and drink industries have processing and packaging machinery tend to produce
high noise levels. Noise at work can cause hearing damage that is permanent and disabling
and may happened when worker exposure to noise overtime. Although workers are required
to use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment for their hearing protection by put on their
ear muffs when working around the workplace. But in a long term manner there are chances
of workers suffering damage to their hearing. Besides, the excessive noise in the work area
may hindering worker communication. Noise can interfere with communication between
workers and make them difficult to hear. These factors can also lead to safety risk by putting
their life in danger which may caused injury or death.
