Indian Animators

Animation industry has spread far and wide and many countries have now effectively proved a
challenge to Hollywood. India too has not lagged far behind. We have in the country talented
animators who have entertained us with an added dose of Indian ethos. Here is a list of some
animators who have made a name in India. It is largely due to them that Indian animation has been
recognized world over.

Ram Mohan
Father of Indian Animation
Mr. Ram Mohan can be regarded as the Godfather of Indian Animation. He was instrumental
behind Indias first traditionally animated film Ek Anek Aur Ekta way back in 1977. Apart from it, his
animation sketches can be found in movies like Bhuvan Shome (1969), Shatranj Ke Khiladi,(1977),
Pati Patni aur Woh (1978) etc.

Dhimant Vyas
Instrumental in introducing CLAY ANIMATION
Vyas is credited for introducing clay animation in the Indian animation industry. He has done
animated commercials for BBC, UNICEF, Zee TV, MTV, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon to cite a few.
 Gayatri Rao
The queen of Indian animation
Gayatris claim to fame is that she is one of the very few who had an opportunity to do an internship
at the Walt Disney Studios in 1994 which was sponsored by the UNICEF. This exposure helped her
to gain expertise in traditional animation which supplemented her BFA and Masters in Design in
Visual Communication, Design and Animation knowledge. Currently she runs Animagic as well as
serves as its director.

Kireet Khurana
The Indian animation hero
An alumnus of Sheridan College (Canada) and founder cum creative head of 2nz Animation Co,
Kireet is credited with directing Indias first live-action and 3D animation combined film Toonpur Ka
Super Hero in 2010. He has also served as animation directors for movies like Hum
Tum (2004), Shaadi Ka Laddoo (also in 2004)Detective Naani (2009) etc apart from creating
Adventures of Chhota Birbal in 2002.

Father of Chhota Bheem
As the founder MD of Green Gold Animation, his main contribution to Indian animation has been
Chhota Bheem. The USP of his Green Gold Animation Pvt Ltd is that it caters to making cartoons
only for children! Choota Bheem especially has been so successful that it has been deemed as the
most popular television character among children and is telecast in English, Hindi, Telugu and Tamil
languages!
India being a country that is multi-cultural, multi-lingual, the challenges for animators are not small.
Kudos to these wizards who have given life to characters from our epics and traditions to the modern
audience. These animations not only tell a story, but also reflect Indian historical and current ideas,
customs, traditions and day to day events.

An animator is an artist who has the ability to create several images- also called frames, which plays
an illusion when rendered in rapid sequence. Indian animators have proved their mark in a variety of
animation fields- advertisement, film, television, video games, etc. When it comes to film-making, an
extremely creative work, Indian creative animators have awed the world. Artistic styles from India are
acclaimed in the global industry. Indian artists contributed to the world of animation in every form-
cartoons, layout art (designed lighting, and camera angles), storyboard, etc. Indian Animators can be
traced in good numbers in various positions in the international film fraternity, with regular live action
films, as director, producer, sound engineer, editor, and so on.
