I-Search Reflection

For my I-Search project, I researched the profession of a sports psychologist. I chose this

job because I have always been attracted and involved with sports and physical activity ever since

I was a young boy when I partook in a wide variety of sports. My love for basketball and

swimming have survived and I continue participating in those two and representing Casa Grande

today. Currently, I am very knowledgeable regarding sports, so I figured a related profession

would be a good fit for myself. I started by looking for sports related jobs, and I came across a

sports psychologist, which combines two of my top interests: sports and psychology. Before this

project, I never knew this profession existed.

This profession immediately caught my eye and I discovered a lot of new information

concerning psychology as a whole, as well as specifically sports psychology. I learned the main

goal of a sports psychologist is to work with individuals or a team and assist in reaching goals,

maximizing potential, and becoming mentally strong. This especially appeals to me because I

have always enjoyed working with others and watching them grow and develop. I never realized

how important these psychologists are, as they are often a substantial reason behind great

improvement or development on the court. Sports psychologists often perform multiple jobs

within a days work, from teaching and supervising students as a professor to researching and

developing plans to even physically working with athletes and teams; it seems as though sports

psychologists have some freedom and flexibility because there is a wide spectrum of jobs they

can choose. I did not expect there to be such a wide variety. However, during my research, I

discovered a sports psychologists salary was between $50,000 and $80,000 per year. Personally,

I was expecting a higher salary because sports psychologists have the ability to positively impact

an athlete or team and therefore increase their success. Their job also requires a great deal of time,

commitment, and mental energy. Ultimately, after deeply researching sports psychology, it has

become a top interest and a desired future profession.

In order to attain more information, I emailed Bill Cole, a sports psychology expert

stationed in San Jose. He provided some of the challenges he faces on a daily basis, which include

long hours of research and studying, devising intricate plans to ensure growth, and connecting

with his clients. He also provided his sports background and highlighted the importance of being

an experienced athlete in order to be a highly successful sports psychologist. This information

reinforced my initial opinions and I became even more interested in this profession in that I

currently possess many of the essential skills required. He also attached a variety of his methods

he uses with his clients, forty five to be exact, some of which I am able to use and practice on

myself. He explained a story with a man he transformed from a mediocre, ordinary tennis player

to a world champion. It was interesting and reassuring to hear about specific instances where

these methods are effective and create numerous opportunities for athletes. My interview with Mr.

Cole was highly encouraging and helpful because the information he shared was greatly appealing

and now, I possess an even larger interest in sports psychology.

In conclusion, because of this project, I have a general idea of my major in college and

future career. I never even knew this job existed, and now I want to pursue a career in the sports

psychology field. In some ways, this assignment prepared me for an independent future because I

learned the process of creating a resume to apply for jobs, how to conduct research and plans to

reach my goals, and it displayed the time and dedication that are essential to acquire an education

and also an occupation. Before this project, I was indecisive and unsure about future plans, but

now I have a possible future I hope to pursue and turn into a reality.
