2.3 Construction Method of Rover

The designs of mr_03, mr_04, mr_05 provide dimensions of the whole Mars Rover.
The building of the Mars Rover must follow the dimension provided to obtain an accurate
result.
Further detail construction of the individual parts can be found in following sections.
Reference of design mr_01 and mr_02 is needed to assembly the individual parts into a
complete product.

2.3.1 Bottle Holder

For bottle holder, firstly, cut a small hole on the side of Mister Potato can with size 10
x 1.5 cm. Secondly, set the can above the egg box with the hole facing upside and stick it
with super glue. Then, put the mineral bottle 600 ml inside the Mister Potato can.

2.3.2 Base of Rover

For the base of rover, first measure and mark it into size 20 x 25 cm on the egg carton
using pencil. After that, fulfil the space in egg cartons with newspaper. Stick the upside of the
egg carton with another side of egg carton with super glue. Press it firmly to ensure both side
will stick together.

2.3.3 Wheel of Rover

For the wheels part, measure and shape Styrofoam into circle with diameter 12 cm.
Make 4 circles and cut the circle with cutter. Cut little circle in the middle of the disc with
diameter size 1.5 cm as a hole. Attach each Styrofoam on the disc with double tape and stick
another disc to the another Styrofoam. Slide the flagstick into the hole in four parts of the
wheel.

2.3.4 Mars rover

To build out the rover, tear the newspaper and fill in all the empty spaces between two
egg cartons. Then, use two bottle caps to stabilize the tyre so that it will not fall out from the
axle. Use hot glue gun to stick two bottle caps 4.8 cm from both end of the flagstick and two
bottle caps right at both end of flagstick. Lastly, put the flagstick with wheels at 2.5 cm from
both end of the egg cartons.

Tender Evaluation
Criteria

14
Introduction

This document contains the criteria that will be used to evaluate other companies for
the manufacture of a prototype Mars Lander/Rover. The winning tenderer for the
manufacture will be the group that most successfully satisfies the criteria that are laid out
below.
3.1 Marking Criteria and Explanation in Depth

3.1.1 Responsibility and Quality of Work

Responsible is the most important value that everyone must be instilled since
young especially for engineers. In A&M Consultancy, we require contractors who has
strong responsibility and able to make a model out successfully even after several
times of failing. The contractors must ensure that the Rovers model has reached the
level of expectation of the designers and meet the clients criteria.

Criteria Marks

The model is not completed and does not follow the drawing design of the 0
designers.

The model is completed and followed the drawing design of the designers 1
but does not satisfied by the designers.

The model is completed and followed the drawing design of the designers 2
but considers as acceptable only for designers.

The model is nicely completed and followed the drawing design of the 3
designers. The model reaches the level of expectation of the designers.
Table 3.1.1: Marking Criteria for Responsibility and Quality for Work.

3.1.2 Experience
Experience is very important in every project. Everyone who had experienced
in that particular field which related to the project got the priority to finish their works.
Experience can help engineers to improve the way of solving problems.

Criteria Marks

Does not involve in any activity in particular field. 0

Involved in events that help to gain experience but does not participate in 1
the events to gain the experience.

Involved in events that help to gain experience but does not get the 2
certificates.

Involved in events that help to gain experience and get the certificates. 3
Table 3.1.2: Marking Criteria for Experience.

15
3.1.3 Communication
It is a way for member to relate and communicate each other in purpose to
discuss and improve the project. Communication is also the first necessity in the
group to start from brainstorming until working in the process of the whole project
event. The communication can be done through social media or face-to-face (meeting).

Criteria Marks

Each member do not have any communication at all through social media 0
or by meeting face-to-face.

Each member at least gather to discuss about the project once a week and 1
able to provide minutes of meeting.

Group members having discussion about the project at least two times a 2
week and able to provide minutes of meeting.

Group members having discussion about the project at least three times a 3
week and able to provide minutes of meeting.
Table 3.1.3: Marking Criteria for Communication.

3.1.4 Time Management

An engineer should manage time perfectly in doing their own task. In A&M
Consultancy, time management is the most important skill as this may affect the
progress and the level of perfection of our project.

Criteria Marks

Failed to submit stage 1 design package on time. 0

Submit stage 1 design package to Turnitin on time. 1

Submit stage 1 design package to Turnitin 1 day before deadline. 2

Submit stage 1 design package to Turnitin 3 days before deadline. 3

16
3.1.5 Cost Management
A & M Consultancy required a project that will minimise company budget
while remain the same project outcomes. This will also encourage the uses of recycled
materials as they are cheaper compare to new materials. Creativity of designers can
also be tested as they try to design a Mars Rover with lower construction cost while
maintaining the quality.

Criteria Marks

Risk Management
Plan

18
Introduction

In every project, there must have some risks that we might not expect and foresee. Every risk we must take it seriously so that will not
become dangerous to everyone. To avoid all the risks in a project, a risk management plan must carry out to let all the team members know
about the risks.

Table 4.0: Risk Management Plan

20
4.2 Explanation on Risk Management Plan Table

4.2.1 Design Stage

The dimension of each material was not measured carefully and the
measurement was imprecise. This will cause the design drawing vary from the real
prototype and lead to failure of prototype construction. The risk matrix is high and
need to be minimised or eliminate. Contractor can measure the dimension of
materials several times and take the average reading to reduce parallax error in order
to obtain the most precise reading. In this case, designers are able to obtain the
accurate reading and the drawing will be drawn according to scale.

Miscommunication between each member may occur because the company

was newly formed and members do not know each other well. This will cause the
company failed to complete design package on time and get a penalty. The likelihood
is possible and the consequence is major. In order to reduce the risk, team members
shall communicate more within each other and try to understand the strength,
weakness and difficulties of each member so that work and task can be distributed
evenly and solve communication problems base on team members personalities.
Minor conflict may still happen because of different ideas but can be solve easily.

Design package is mainly based on the ideas of designers and contractors, but
plagiarism may still happen because team members may make use of online or
friends resources when they lack of ideas. Plagiarism may also happen
unintentionally when team members using others ideas without knowing it. Marks
will be deducted when get caught in plagiarism or get a zero mark and failed the
subject in serious case. Team members can try to brainstorming for new ideas or
doing citation and references when refer to others works.

4.2.2 Construction Stage

In construction stage, the materials state in design packages of other company
may hard to be found and the cost is high. This will cause contractors spending more
time to search for materials and will also cause a rise in project cost. Contractors
need to analyse each design carefully to search for a design that is easy to build, low
in construction cost and the materials is easy to be found while the quality of
prototype still maintain.
During construction, contractor may not fully understand the drawings of
designers and cannot produce a precise prototype that will satisfy the designers. The
prototype may not able to sustain the drop impact and cause marks to be deducted.
Contractor must frequently contact designers for consultation to understand the
design. Designers can also guide the contractors to build the prototype in order to
make a perfect model that will pass the testing stage.

21
In the construction of prototype, contractor may get hurt by tools such as blade
and scissors when misuse the tools. In this case, contractors will get injured and will
slow down the construction progress. This causes the prototype cannot be completed
on time and hand in to designers. The risk matrix is consider high so contractors have
to read tools manual before using it and wear safety gear such as gloves to protect
from injuries. Although safety gear is wear, contractor may still be hurt by tools
cause by human errors and safety gear will not fully protect contractor from injuries.

4.2.3 Testing Stage

The prototype of the Mars Landers may not be completed on time cause by
various issues faced by the contractors. This will causes the prototype testing and
scoring fail to conduct and lead to an undone project. The risk matrix is extreme and
must be eliminated from the project. Designers can sign agreement with contractors
and also always keep in touch with contractors to make sure contractors are on the
building progress so that they manage to complete the prototype in time. Some
contractors may ignore the agreement and avoid contact with designers. In this case,
designers can report this to respective tutors to take reasonable action.

Team members may be late during the prototype testing. This will causes
marks to be deducted and given a bad impression to client for being unpunctual. In
order to minimize the risk, team leader or members should always remind each other
the date and time for prototype testing. Various ways can be used to remind team
members such as texting, phone calls and emails to reduce residual risks as members
will be informed all the time.

Mars lander prototype may not be able to sustain the impact after drop from
the ram and break apart. This will causes loss of marks according to marking criteria.
The prototype should be modified and tested during construction stage to confirm
that it can sustain the impact and remain unbroken. In order to come out a prototype
with good sustainability, contractors and designers should work together to come out
with a better design of prototype. After the test, the prototype built will able to
survive the drop and remain unbroken.
