of study as a challenge for the linkage between waterfront and the city even been isolated for the old
industrial building and the train station. We understood that these two last elements mentioned can be
transformed into positive points and be integrated in our design.

Since the analysis of the history of the city with the tradition of exchange goods as central point
between east and west, the importance of the port and the new functions that are being appended in the
present focusing the future, the program of our project was developed.

This program has two different ways to read this area of the Old Port of the Trieste, but they
complement each other and from the overlapping of this two system of layers the final result is taken.

In the first master analysis, the study area is the conjunction of the city and the nature that arrive in
gradient until that point and there will give space to a series of new experience and sensations. This idea was
applied into the program in the form of Urban/Water Farm integrated with Urban gardens, natural landscape
and plantations that starts strong in a point and dissolves in the direction of the city center.

In a second deeper analysis, we stated that this program goal is through its physical system create a
direct link between the train station and the waterfront, in a diagonal that would be strong enough to be
compared with the diagonal that leads fluxes nowadays from the square in front of the train station until the
historic city center. Strong in the sense of the figure and symbol. For this the architecture developed needs to
be integrate with the program applied into it in a chain of relation with the population of the city, with the use
of the land and even more important, with the context. The physicality is thought in a way to head fluxes of
people and fluxes of activities over this new axis create for the city.

Related with this, another goal of the project is to attract and to fix a young population in Trieste, city
that is already called 'city of knowledge' by its universities. Our propose is to invest in this scope and develop a
program that embrace the first master analysis and continue this idea. From this appears the idea of a
Research center and faculties, all related with the study of bio-diversity and themes according to agriculture
and water. With this program comes all the necessities to support it, as dormitories, recreational areas, sport
facilities, library, market place, etc.

Aggregating value to this system, this project can transform this space in a place with a new
atmosphere of experiences in the city for the population and though different gradient of green, different
forms of use and relation are made in a sense that our proposal for the use of the old building is the mixed use,
thinking about the 24h use of the space, requalifying an area already with infrastructure by the treatment and
implementation of our new axis of solid-void city life.
 The same solid-void idea will be applied in our architecture. The project length is about 800 meters in a
study between building typology and gradient of solids and voids and the final result gives to us 3 different
gradient relations: a denser one (solid | project) near the waterfront until a emptier one (void | public spaces)
near the train station.

In the relations in the project site, where the solid is the stronger gradient, the water and the green
are the main actors and a wide perspective is composed in the center framing the skyline, the market, or urban
landscape. The research center with laboratories, offices, individual and collective study rooms are in an
environment with wide opening views and terraces. Concrete slabs and transparency control the ambience.

As the architecture advances, we find the second moment of the gradient, the relation with the
industrial heritage, and different approaches are made: shelter, parasiting the structure or cutting though, all
depending on the rapport we want to provide to the user. The heritage is always respected and seen as a
positive value, where the new and the old, the future and the past are connected and working together in a
system of layers (metaphor for palimpsest).

And for a final moment in this architectonic gradient, we present a continuous ground floor where the
public spaces domain and the program is elevated to punctual buildings (the tallest in the project) that direct
the internal perspective, cutting the old port station (goods transport) until the new internal square of the
main Train Station. In those buildings (4 or 7 stories) take place faculties facilities as dormitories, canteen,
study rooms, gym, sport facilities, library, cafes, meeting rooms.

For the integration of the Train station in the project, an analysis and study were made in a sense to
propose the reformulation of it through the design of an apotheotic internal covered square in the main body of
the station that will function as the core and element of junction for the all other surrounding building that
now will redesign the New train station, adding new commercial functions, besides hotel, recreational, museum.
