INTERNET

DANGERS
WHITNEY FREEMAN
OVERVIEW
In many workplaces, most of us will have
access to the internet and need to use it.

The internet, as we all know, is an incredibly

useful tool. But with it comes great dangers.

So here are some tips to keep your

information and your companys information
safe.
S P Y W A R E, Be cautious of the links you click on and the
websites you visit. These could carry

M A L W A R E,
spyware, malware, and viruses.

Be wary of e-mail attachments that are not

sent from company employees.

VIRUSES This not only puts you and the company at

risk, but it can take time to remove.
Some spyware is a pain to remove
from the computer, meaning a loss of
productivity and downtime while the
IT department has to clean up the
PC (CJ Castillo, 2014).
IDENTITY THEFT
Protect your identity by creating longer and more complex passwords using a
mixture of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and numbers.

Never give out personal information like your social security number.

Here are some tips provided by the Department of Homeland Security to keep
your identity safe:
Locking and password protecting your computer and cell phone.
Not sharing specific personal information online, such as your full name or
birthday.
Setting proper privacy settings on social networking sites.
(Stop.Think.Connect, https://www.dhs.gov/stopthinkconnect).
REPUTATION
Be wary of what you post online because [o]nce something is
posted online, it can never be fully deleted. Web searches are
common for college admissions and job interviews, so make
sure you create an online reputation that is an asset rather than
a liability(Potential Internet Dangers, http://www.optimist.org).

Remember, you represent your company. Dont use your work

e-mail for personal messages. Dont use your work e-mail to
endorse or defame other companies, people, or products.
Workplace email addresses usually contain an easily
identifiable company name. When an employee sends an
email, the recipient of the message may infer that the
company endorses the material contained within the
email(Employee Internet Usage,
http://smallbusiness.findlaw.com).
OVER-SHARING
Remember that the internet is a public place.
Whatever you post or share can be seen and read
by others. You represent the company you work
for, so dont put anything online that you dont want
others to see.

Sharing information about illegal activities,

including underage drinking, can cheat [you] out of
scholarships or a job. Sharing information about
where [you] live or go to school can attract
financial or sexual predators (Internet Dangers,
myactionalert.com).
HARASSMENT
Never send offensive material to other
employees or have any offensive material
open on your monitor.

Do not respond to harassment. This only

serves as encouragement to the bully
(Potential Internet Dangers,
http://www.optimist.org).
COPYRIGHT
INFRINGEMENT
[C]opying and distributing someone else's
works without their consent could constitute
copyright infringement (Employee Internet
usage, http://smallbusiness.findlaw.com).

Never use someone elses work without

giving them credit.
M U S I C, V I D E O S,
GAMING
Although we encourage gaming in your free time,[h]aving an entire office
streaming media have an effect on...bandwidth(Castillo, 2014). We
encourage employees to try to limit the amount of media used during work.

As always, be polite and kind to other players. And never harass of flame
players or users through comments on popular video and music sharing
websites.
