Theory of Elasticity and Plasticity
M.TECH. SEMESTER I, IX
Note: Attempt any five question. All question carry equal marks.
Q1. A rigid bar AD is hinged at A and attached to the bar BC and ED as shown in fig. the entire system
is initially stress free the temperature of both bar BC and ED is increased by 25oc negating the weight
of all bar determine normal stress in the bar BC and ED given that EBrass= 90GPa, ESteel=200GPa,Brass=
20x10-6/c, Steel= 12x10-6/c, Area of brass bar =500mm2, Area or steel bar= 250mm2.
Q3. A three span continuous beam ABCD is loaded with ultimate loads as shown in fig. determine
the required plastic moment of resistance when (a) the beam is of uniform section and (b) the three
span of the beam has different section.
Q4. A round steel rod ABC 1.8m long, is firmly held at its ends A and B. AC is 1.2m and 50mm dia. BC
is 0.6m and 40mm dia. At C, a twisting couple of moment 580N-m is applied. Find the moment of
resistance couples at A and B and the maximum shear stress in parts AC and BC of the rod.
Q5. Calculate the thickness of shell required for a vessel of spherical shape 500mm inside diameter,
to withstand an internal pressure of 25N/mm2, if the maximum permissible tensile stress in the shell
is 60N/mm2.
Q6. A steel bar variable section is subjected to forces as shown in fig. taking E =205kN/m2 deter mine
the total elongation in bar.
Q7. Explain Rayleigh Ritz method with suitable example.
a. Elasticity
b. Plasticity
c. Toughness
d. Hardness
e. Brittleness
f. strength
