1 General Description
2 Mechanical Designs
2.1 Rotor
The SL3000/113 WEC has a three-bladed upwind rotor. The blades are
continuously positioned to help optimize the pitch angle. The rotor features
high operational reliability and efficiency. The optimized pitch-control system
helps to substantially reduce maintenance work.

The blade bearings are double row 4-point contact ball bearings.
Blade Bearing
Type Ball bearing
Lubrication Automatic lubrication
Table 2-3: Blade bearing data.
The blades can be turned out of the rotor plane by about 90 degrees and therefore
act as aerodynamically brakes. During normal operation the pitch motors hold the
rotor blades in a defined position via the right gear at the pitch bearing, mounted to
the blade root.
The aerodynamic brake is applied by varying the rotor blade pitch by means of
motors. In the event of a fault (e.g. power loss) the pitch motor is powered by super-
capacitor (one for each drive) in the hub, and can therefore still control the pitch.
Consequently the WEC is completely safe ("fail safe design"). If one pitch drive can
not be activated (e.g. broken cable, broken power supply to hub), the other two
blades can still be turned into feathering position.

There is a compact main shaft between hub and nacelle, which reduces the whole
turbines weight. The drive train adopts back to back configured dual-column
conical main bearing. The main shaft increases the drive trains bearing capacity by
being applied accurate preload. Therefore the gearbox only bears from torque,
which increases the turbines reliability and lifetime.

The main frame is the foundation for the drive train, which transmits forces from the
rotor to the tower, through the yaw system. The bottom surface is machined and
connected to the yaw bearing and the yaw gears are bolted to the front of the main
frame. The main frame transfers the loads from the drive chain to the yaw system
and holds the generator over a bolted supporting structure.

alignment tolerances. The integrated torque limited unit protects the gearbox
against overloads produced from the generator side, which may be caused by short
circuits or power failures.
2.11
Yaw System
The yaw system consists of a single row ball bearing with internal ring gear
which is bolted to the top flange of the tower.
The yaw system is driven by five converter-fed drive units mounted onto the
base plate of the mainframe. Each unit includes an electrical motor, a gearbox
and a pinion.
Yaw brakes ensure that the WEC is in a fixed position when it is realigned with
the actual wind direction. The brakes are released when the nacelle is turning.

At maximum active and reactive power, the turbine reduces either active or reactive
power depending on which type of power has priority (E.g. if reactive power has
priority, the active power is reduced).
Based on the performance of SL3000 wind turbine, in Figure 9.2, the P-Q curve
could be satisfied. It is the basic operating range of the reactive power output. The
range is adjustable with specified requirements.
