BHEL Specification No-OR12434
01. Introduction
This specification covers the requirement of 1250A DC Contactor for oil rig application.
The oilrig control system employs AC-SCR system, which is based on generation of AC
power. The AC power is converted to DC power thru thyristor power converters and this
controlled & variable DC power is fed to various DC drilling motors thru DC contactor
which opens & closes as per system design & safety interlocks requirement. The DC
Contactors are fitted in SCR panels.
Based on above, the requirement is for M/s Rosshill (Now NOV-USA) make DC
Contcator Part No-0100-0389-02 or HGC (Hill Graham- UK, Part No-C530 as following:
The DC Contactors are required for supplying DC power to main drilling DC Motors.
These contactors are single pole, non- polarized design, equipped with two auxiliary
switches each having two sets of changeover contacts. The contactor should require a
minimum amount of maintenance. The main contacts arc gap, the magnetic gap and
wear allowance adjustments are to be pre set at factory and no field adjustments should
required at site. Maintenance to be limited to periodic inspection for cleanliness & loose
connection only. The contactor should operate with 74V DC coil interlocked with
assignment requirements

The above DC Contactors should be designed & manufactured for oilrig application and
reliability of performance to be proven during last two decades. It should offer rugged &
reliable type of system protection critical for heavy-duty oil rig application The DC
Contactors should be RossHill make contactor, Part No-0100-0389-02 or M/s
HillGraham UK make, Part No-C530.
The coil circuit of DC contactor should be fitted with an economy resistor to reduce the
coil current, when the contactor is closed. A normally closed auxiliary contact is to be
used to "Short out " the resistor when the contactor is open. The typical arrangement is
shown in figure-2.
