Throughout my entire internship, I Constantly trained, supervised my
paraeducator in order for him to be as successful as possible in the classroom as well as used him to help my students so they could be successful. Most of the time, it appeared as if we were co-teacher because my instructional assistant would chime in and help students without being told to. During the first week of school, I met with my paraeducator and went over the responsibilities and duties I expected of him. This was helpful because it led to an open communication between the two of us and no doubts about what I expected. This enabled everything to run smoothly in my class. I also prepared and gave him cheat sheet ring to help him proactive strategies, potential reinforcements, prompt hierarchy, classroom reminders, and the four reasons for behaviors.
As an intern and Educational Specialist it was also important for me to make
instruction comprehensible and meaningful through differentiated lessons based on students experiences, interest, linguistic and cultural background and developmental learning needs. One example of this can be seen in the unmodified and modified differentiated catapult research papers. General education students were expected to complete a two-page research paper. However, students with different needs, whether due to a disability or language abilities, were given the modified essay in order to make the assignment meaningful and comprehensible for every student. I also wanted each student to be challenged at their individual zone of proximal development. This differentiation of this assignment allowed every student to complete the assignment and get something out of it. Next, are the two introduction videos I picked based on what I learned about my students interests in order to engage them in physics and make it meaningful to them. The one video shows different activities that my students were interested in such as, dancing, skate boarding, bike riding, surfing, playing the piano, the sound waves heard when listening to music and more. The second video talks about what physics has done for the students lately including the technology used in their cell phones. Because both of these videos linked to the interests of my students, these videos got my students extremely excited about physics. The last piece of evidence on this page was included to make instruction meaningful and comprehensible to the many many football lovers in my class. I found a NFL video that discussed inertia and how it worked in football. This enabled my students to learn about their interests and through their experiences of playing football with their friends.
I made instruction comprehensible and meaningful based on my students
experiences, linguistic and cultural backgrounds by incorporating by incorporating Dia De Los Muertos into my classroom. This was such an amazing experience. The entire school was asked to participate, but only some classes decided to participate. I was so happy I decided to participate. Including my students cultural background in my class enabled me to learn so much about my students and had my students more engaged than I had ever seen them before. They were so excited to do a class circle map with me to share what it was that day of the dead is, what it meant to them, and how each kid celebrated. My students were at the edge of their seats calling out things that their families did. This was an amazing experience that I think I will incorporate into my class every year regardless what subject I teach. I specifically did a day of the dead circle map, played YouTube videos on the day of the dead, created an alter for the dead, and had my kids made candy skulls. We ended the week with a Day of the Dead celebration where we celebrated our friends and family who had passed. This was a week long experience that every single student in my class thoroughly enjoyed.
