Introduction

The Catholic Board of Education prides itself at being a premier organization that currently has

four elementary schools in New Providence, The Bahamas. St. Cecilias School caters to

students from grades Kindergarten to six. Over the past year there has been a noticeable

decrease in students scores in the area of vocabulary. While having a conversation with the

Vice Principal she voiced her concern about this decline and asked me if I would be willing to

host a workshop with my co-workers in using Quizlet.com as I had had previous success with

this when I was a homeroom teacher and more recent success using it to teach Information

Technology terms. The proposed workshop would take place during on the day designated for

professional development for staff.

Target Audience

The academic staff at the St. Cecilias Catholic Primary school will be the initial focus group for

this Professional development workshop. This current staff consists of twelve (12) Class

Homeroom Teachers, three (3) teachers aide, seven (7) specialist teachers and three (3)

members of Administration. A Bachelors Degree is the minimum qualification for any of the

Classroom teachers and Specialists teachers who are employed to the Catholic Board of

Education. All teachers have to utilize the computer to enter grades and also communicate with

administration both locally and at the board level so, this signifies that all participants have at

least entry level computer skills present. Staff age varies from mid twenties to mid sixties. All

members of staff have been with the Catholic Board of Education for over 5 years.
For the past two academic years emphasis has been placed on teachers creating my student

centred lessons with a greater infusion of technology. Employees have also been mandated to

seek professional development courses and this has been added to the yearly appraisals that

staff members take part in.

Proposed Topic and Format of the Training

The Proposed workshop is entitled Tech Bites:- Using Quizlet to Enhance Vocabulary . The

workshop will take place in the schools computer lab on the day assigned for Professional

Development of Teachers, on this day students are absent and the next day happens to be Mid-

Term Break. It will be a face to face interactive workshop, with teachers utilizing their own

devices or devices available in the computer lab of the school. The Trainer will give a brief

lecture which will be followed by demonstrations, teachers hands on participation , questions

and answers , viewing on finished flashcards and workshop evaluation and assessment. The

workshop will be held between the hours of 9 am to 3 pm with a 30 minutes break for

refreshments and a 1 hour break for lunch both of which will be provided by the institution.

Contextual Analysis

Orienting Context:-

The workshop was designed with several considerations in mind as it relates to

learners age and experience. The date chosen for the workshop immediately precedes a

midterm break as such the strategies used for the IP were designed with this in mind.

Instructional Context

The Schools Computer Lab will be used to host this workshop. Participants will also be

asked take their own laptops. Items needed for projection are already in the lab.

Transfer Context

The skills learned at the workshop can easily be applied to any vocabulary in any subject

area. Grade level teachers will also get a chance to collaborate to create or tweak sets

that they can use at their grade level either digitally or printed.

Instructional Strategies

There are several instructional strategies that will be utilized throughout this workshop. Please

preview the list of strategies that will be utilized below :-

Demonstration/ Modelling Trainer will demonstrate for students different skills.

Analogy

Analogies help students to relate hard concepts with prior knowledge.. Teaching with

Baking a cake

Have you ever baked a cake? One of the first steps is knowing what you want to bake, then you

gather the ingredients, mix the ingredients, put them in the oven, then sample the finished

product.

Well making a cake is similar to creating a flashcard set

Firstly you need to decide what you want to create the set about (topic) then find the terms,

definitions and pictures for the terms, input items select create then print, display or use the

set.
Reflection

This workshop is gauged towards the teachers and administrative staff at St Cecilias School. I

took for granted that this assignment would have been easy to complete as I had the

opportunity before to conduct a workshop for a different group of teachers. I did not anticipate

all the different levels of complexity that would really needs to go into the proper presentation

of a workshop.

There are several instructional design strategies that were used throughout the duration of this

workshop. I deliberately started with an icebreaker that allows for discussion in order to get

teachers related and ready to interact. Skills to be learnt will be demonstrated and participants

will be given a chance to practice their skills. Peer Collaboration will be encouraged as some

persons are stronger in some areas than others.

The peer feedback helped to provide some guide along with the samples that were provided. If

I could do one thing differently I would employ better time management skills. This has been a

very educational learning experience.

Quizlet is an excellent tool for learning factual information and vocabulary.

It does not really aid the development of students understanding and exam question technique. This
needs to be developed by practising exam questions.

A huge range of Geography past questions can be found on the VLE link on the school website . Other
departments should also have a similar provision of such resources.
