Body:

Theconstructionofthebodydiffersfromthatofthegatevalve.Thebodyportsarearranged
suchthattheflowisfromtheundersideofthedisk.Thoughthecodespecifiesthattheglobe
valvesshallbedesignedsuitableforinstallationineitherdirectionofflow,thepreferreddirection
offlowforglobevalveshallbefromunderthedisk.Normallythedirectionofflowis

castorembossedonthevalvebody.

Therearetwotypesofportdesignspossible,thefullportandthereducedport.

Inthefullportdesignthebodyportsshallbeaslargeaspracticabledesignconsiderations
permit.However,innocasethenetareaoftheborethroughtheseatofglobeshallbelessthan
85%oftheareaoftheactualpipebore.Inthereducedportdesign,theportdiameterisnormally
onesizelessthanthatoftheconnectedpipe.

Theflatfacedtypedisksareusedwhenthevalveistobeusedforthepositiveshutoff
service.Forsuchvalves,diskcanbeprovidedwithanelastomerringorfacingwhichwill
ensurethesame.

Theneedletypediskisusedwhenfinerflowcontrolistobeachieved.

Thesediskscanalsobeofcontoureddesignasusedinflowcontrolvalves.Theseare
generallyusedforpreciseflowcontrolapplications.Bellowsealistheonlywaytoachieve
emissioncontrolinthistypeofvalve.

Thelooseplugdesignallowsthesametoberenewable.Wheninthefullyopenposition,the
netareabetweenthediskandseatshallbeequaltotheareathroughtheseat.

Thediskshallbeeitherlooseorintegralwithstem.Theintegraldesignisusedmainlyforthe
needletypeofdisc.

Stem:

Incaseofglobevalves,thestemsarealwaysofrisingdesignalongwiththehandwheel.The
stemisprovidedwithadisknutatthelowerend.Theupperendisprovidedwithahandwheel
screwedbystemnut.

Gland,Glandflange,Packing&Lantern:

Designanddetailssameasthatofgatevalves.

Seatrings:

Incaseofglobevalvesofcarbonsteel,thehardfacedseatscanbedirectlydepositedonthe
body.

YokeandYokebush:

TheconstructionoftheYokeisthesameasthatofthegatevalve.TheYokesleeveofthegate
valveismachinefinishedonallsurfaceswhereasthatoftheglobevalveshallbescrewedor
fittedinthepositionandlocked.

HandwheelandHandwheelNut:.

Unlikeingatevalvethehandwheelalsorisesalongwiththestemforglobevalve.Whenused
asacontrolvalve,actuatorsarefixedsothatthestemmovementiseffectedthroughthesame.
Incaseofbellowsealedglobevalves,thenonrisinghandwheeldesignisprovidedsimilarto
thatofgatevalve.Thisistoensurethatthebellowsarenotsubjectedtotorsion.

Theabovearethemajordesignaspectsoftheglobevalvesandwherecomparisonofthe
samewiththegatevalvesasregardsthematerialofconstruction,endconnectionetc.are
concerned,thesameshallbeselectedbythepipingengineerbasedontheserviceofthelineto
whichthevalvesareattached.Theenvironmentinwhichthevalveisinstalledalsowillhaveto
beconsideredwhileselectingthematerial.
