UWL Fashion Week is a multidisciplinary exploration of social justice and sustainability issues
through the lens of fashion. Running 23-27 October 2017, the weeks programming will include
film and scholars and designers from around the country to explore how fashion connects with
themes of gender, race, class, sexuality, and the environment.
We invite the campus community to join this conversation. For the final day of fashion week (27
October), we will be holding a one-day symposium and fashion show. We are seeking proposals
for this symposium from students, faculty, and staff that engage with the intersection of social
justice, sustainability, and fashion. Specifically, we are looking for proposals of
Demonstrations
What skills can you share to make fashion more creative and sustainable? May include
upcycling
alternative materials and techniques
mending/tailoring skills
Designs
What do you have to contribute to fashion? WE WANT YOUR ORIGINAL DESIGNS!
create and construct with an eye toward class, race, gender, sexuality, sustainability, and
ethics
well supply you with basic materials (see guidelines for submitting a proposal)
GUIDELINES FOR SUBMITTING A PROPOSAL
1. All submissions are due by noon on 1 October 2017
2. Completed cover sheet, submission forms, and required attachments should be sent as a
single pdf file to tlilley@uwlax.edu with FW2017 as the subject line
a. Any questions may be directed to the same email in the meantime
3. Please note the following
a. Presentations and Posters Submissions
i. limit two submissions per person
ii. must be submitted separately
iii. must include an abstract (limit of 200 words)
b. Demonstrations Submissions
i. limit two submission per person
ii. may be submitted together
iii. must include short discussion (limit of 200 words) of
1. technique/material
2. how submission connects with social justice and sustainability
issues
c. Design submissions
i. limit seven pieces per person
ii. may be submitted as a collection
iii. must include sketches or photos of designs, along with a designer
statement (limit 200 words) that details how the work engages with social
justice and sustainability themes
4. If you are submitting designs, fabrication materials can be provided to you if desired.
