MANISTEE — Onekama
native Colin Grenn was a
pretty wise young man who
would do just about any-
thing to help his family and
friends, so it really didn’t
come as much of a surprise
to anyone following his
tragic passing from a house
fire in Grand Rapids back
on May 19, 2009 that he
had made the decision with
his family to be an organ
and tissue donor.
As his mother, Connie,
told Colin’s story on Friday
afternoon there wasn’t a
dry eye left in the room at
West Shore Medical Center
among those attending the
11th Annual Gift of Life
Rosebush planting to com-
memorate organ and tis-
sue donation by the Organ
Transplant Support Group
of Northern Michigan/Gift
of Michigan. However,
there weren’t any tears in
the eyes of Connie as she
spoke, because she right-
fully wore the smile of a
mother who was extremely
proud of her son for what
he had done to give life to
others.
The Grenn family was
honored as the Donor
Family of the Year at the
annual rosebush plant-
ing ceremony, and were
represented by Colin’s
mother, brother Jessie, and
grandmother Heide Siklich.

big deal for us as we are always trying to
grow this and do it better.”

was something they had
discussed as a family long
before the fire took Colin’s
life. She said it surprised
many people, but seemed
like such a natural deci-
sion for them to make as a
family.
“I am still amazed at
the incredible positive
response we got, as you
assume it is something that
everyone does, and for us it
was a natural thing to do as
a family,” said Grenn. “We
had discussed it thinking it
would never happen to us,
but talking about it prior to
that time made it an easy
decision.”
She said, since that
time, many people who
knew Colin have told them
that it has inspired them
to make the same decision.
However, Grenn cautioned
them that they should all
speak to their families to
make them aware of that
decision to avoid any prob-
lems when that moment
does arrive.
“So many of his young
friends said that because
of Colin they were going to
become an organ donor,

line because it is such a clear

Each week, this column is an
opportunity to share something
I’ve learned or seen or done
— something that celebrates life
in Manistee County. I gathered
a whole lot of material for this
week’s column, that’s for sure.
Last Wednesday, a gentle-
man called the chamber office
because he had a sailboat that
he no longer used and he won-
dered if we could help him
locate a local non-profit agency
who could auction off the boat
and use the proceeds for the
benefit of the community.
Ummm … YES. We shared with
him the list of community orga-
nizations and I felt so proud of
our community as we described
each organization and the gen-
erous ways that we serve each
other here.
Last weekend, my hus-
band and I had dinner at
the Glenwood in Onekama,
finally using a gift certificate
we received from the chamber
board of directors as a wedding
present. Dinner for two on a

Colin back to life after 30
minutes of CPR, because
he knew he still had some-
thing left to do on Earth.
“I really feel that Colin
was on his way to that
beautiful place, and he
turned around and real-
ized that there were those
people waiting for those
organs, tissue, and eyes
and he said ‘OK, I will go
back there to help them’
and that gives me a lot
of comfort today. That is
how he lived his life, as
he would have given any-
thing for anyone, and a lot
of people are doing good
today because of him.”
The annual Gift of Life
ceremony has been taking
place for the past 11 years,
and as Bev Cherwinski,
founder/coordinator of
Organ Transplant Support
Group of Northern
Michigan, and Gift of Life
Michigan organ and tis-
sue donation coordinator
Penny Colthurst pointed
out, the rosebush planting
has played a big role in
educating about the sig-
nificance of organ trans-
plants. They have planted
rosebushes in Gaylord,
Cheboygan, Petoskey,
Charlevoix, Traverse
City, Gladwin, Alpena,
they have their kids with
them at the counter, so
we have been looking at
another way to do it. We
are talking to the legisla-
tors about putting a check
box on the income tax for
when you file your taxes.”
Land also stressed the
need to discuss the mat-
ter with family members
about their wishes as she
said problems often arise
in a hospital causing hard
feelings.
“I was at one of the
advisory board meetings
and listening to a couple
of doctors that still have
to deal with those types
of problems,” said Land.
“The person signed up to
be a donor, but didn’t talk
to the family. It is best to
let the family know ahead
of time what is going
to happen and what to
expect.”
City of Manistee Mayor
Ilona Haydon also spoke
and showed those in
attendance her driver’s
license that shows she has
signed up to be an organ
donor.
“I have talked to many
where a tragedy occurred
and the gift of life has
turned their sorrow into
a gift of forever, so I urge
each and every one to be a
donor and give the gift of
a lifetime,” said Haydon.

Cherwinski, who is
an 11-year survivor of a
lung transplant and the
founder of this program,
said it is a way of paying
tribute to those who make
that the local medical
center was selected as
the recipient of the 11th
Rose Bush Ceremony. He
pointed out that WSMC
is a longtime partner in
the donation program
and cited some eye open-
ing statistics about organ
donation.
“I am something of a
numbers guy, so let me
give you some numbers
on how organ and tissue
donations save lives,”
said Parks. “Each organ
donor can save up to eight
lives and tissue donors
up to 50 people. Each day
car accident.
“She loved people and
we have never regret-
ted it for one moment,”
said Gloria. “She spoke
of wanting to go to col-
lege to be in the medical
field, and we never knew
it would be this way, but
then she always wanted to
help people.”
Holly Werlein spoke on
how she was the recipient
of a liver transplant and
how someone giving that
important gift saved her
life. She said today she
is able to compete in the
transplant games that are
ceremony. The rosebush
will live on at West Shore
Medical Center as con-
stant reminder of appre-
ciation for those who gave
the ultimate gift — the gift
of life. It will also serve as
an inspiration to encour-
age others to follow that
same noble path in the
future.
