What are Four Digit Numbers?

We may divide 4-digit numbers in 9 groups.

(i) 1000 to 1999 (one thousand to one thousand nine hundred ninety nine)

(ii) 2000 to 2999 (two thousand to two thousand nine hundred ninety nine)

(iii) 3000 to 3999 (three thousand to three thousand nine hundred ninety nine)

(iv) 4000 to 4999 (four thousand to four thousand nine hundred ninety nine)

(v) 5000 to 5999 (five thousand to five thousand nine hundred ninety nine)

(vi) 6000 to 6999 (six thousand to six thousand nine hundred ninety nine)

(vii) 7000 to 7999 (seven thousand to seven thousand nine hundred ninety nine)

(viii) 8000 to 8999 (eight thousand to eight thousand nine hundred ninety nine)

(ix) 9000 to 9999 (nine thousand to nine thousand nine hundred ninety nine)

Note: Four digit numbers begin with 1000.

If all the numbers of one digit, then two digits and then three digits are placed step by
step to the right of 1 Thousand according to their place values, the numbers from 1001
to 1999 are formed.

How to Write Four Digit-numbers in Numerals and Words?

There are four digits in a four-digit number. According to their values, the digits are placed
from right to left at ones place, tens place, hundreds place and thousands place.

For example, in the number 6572;

2 is at unit/ones place having its value 2 1 = 2

7 is at tens place having its value 7 10 = 70
5 is at hundreds place having its value 5 100 = 500
6 is at thousands place having its value 6 1000 = 6000
So, 6572 = 6000 + 500 + 70 + 2
6572 is the short form whereas 6000 + 500 + 70 + 2 is the expanded form.

It is read as Six thousand five hundred seventy two.

To write a four-digit number in numerals a comma is marked before writing the three
digits from the right. The only digit left is the digit of thousands.
As in 8279, a comma is marked before 279, the only digit left is 8, whose value is
8000. The number will be written in numerals as 8,279 and written in words as Eight
thousand two hundred seventy nine.

Here there are 3 categories to write 4-digit numbers i.e., numbers in numerals,

to Roman Numerals

The Roman digits are used for the conversion of numbers to Roman numerals. In the
Hindu-Arabic system, the digits used in English or International numeration are 1, 2, 3,
4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 0.

The values of the international numeration in Roman digits are as follow:

One (1) = I Fifty (50) = L

Five (5) = V Hundred (100) = C

Ten (10) = X Five hundred (500) = D

Examples on conversion of numbers to Roman numerals:

Write the following numbers in Roman numerals:

(i) 4 = 5 - 1 = IV (ii) 9 = 10 - 1 = IX

So, 4 = IV So, 9 = IX

(iii) 24 = 25 - 1 = XXIV (vi) 20 = 10 + 10 = XX

So, 24 = XXIV So, 20 = XX

(v) 11 = 10 + 1 = XI (vi) 26 = 25 + 1 = XXVI

So, 11 = XI So, 26 = XXVI

(vii) 39 = 40 - 1 = 30 + 10 - 1 (viii) 38 = 20 + 10 + 5 + 3
= XXXIX = XXXVIII

So, 39 = XXXIX So, 38 = XXXVIII
