CHAPTER III

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the discussion on the research design, the sources

of data, the population of the study, the research instrument and the validation of

the research instrument. The data gathering procedure and the statistical

treatment that were applied to analyze the gathered data are also included in

this study.

Research Design

This research employed a descriptive method of study. Collected data

were presented in textual and tabular forms. It provided a detailed presentation of

information in order to describe in detail the variables of the study. This study

assessed the perceptions of the first year BSHRM and BSHM students in taking

up hospitality course as their course preference.

The study looked into the perceptions of the freshmen students in

taking up hospitality course at Mariners Polytechnic Colleges Foundation

Legazpi Campus for school year 2010-2011 in terms of: demographic profile in

terms of age, sex, status, family monthly income and school graduated from;

the perception among the freshmen students about hospitality course in MPCF-

LC in terms of: facilities, employment opportunity, departmental programs,

parents choice and advertisements; the different problems being encountered

by the students in MPCF-LC in terms of enrolment procedure, enrolment

27

requirements, classroom condition, subjects enrolled and subject instructors;

and the possible recommendations that can be proposed to address the

problems encountered by the respondents in terms of: enrolment procedure,

enrolment requirements, classroom condition, subject enrolled and subject

instructor.

Sources of Data

This research utilized two sources of data, which were the primary and

secondary sources of data. These were used to find answers to the problems

that were presented. The primary sources of data were the responses of the

target respondents, the freshmen students taking up hospitality course at

Mariners Polytechnic Colleges Foundation Legazpi City for school year 2010-

2011 through the use of prepared questionnaires. The secondary data came from

the records of the library, magazines, journals books, and both published and

unpublished thesis and dissertations. Likewise, articles from the internet also

served as references for this study.

Population of the Study

The main respondents of this study were the one hundred freshmen

students and transferees of the BSHRM and BSHM who were randomly

interviewed and given survey questionnaires. A total of one hundred respondents

were purposively used to gather the data. The breakdown of the population of

the study is presented in Table A.

Table A

BSHM 25 25

Total 100 100%

Research Instrument

In this study, the main instrument that was used in the data gathering was

a structured questionnaire. The content of the questionnaire was based on the

statement of the problem. This was prepared by the researchers with the

guidance of the research adviser. The questionnaire was composed of four

parts, which were the perceptions of the freshmen students in taking up

hospitality course at MPCF-LC in terms of: demographic profile in terms of age,

sex, status, family monthly income and school graduated from ; the perception

among the freshmen students about hospitality course at Mariners Polytechnic

Colleges Foundation Legazpi City in terms of: facilities, employment opportunity,

departmental programs, parents choice and advertisements ; the different

problems being encountered by the students at Mariners Polytechnic Colleges

Foundation Legazpi City in terms of enrolment procedure, enrolment

requirements, and class room condition; and the possible recommendations may
29

be proposed to solve problems of the respondents enrolled in Hospitality

courses, in terms of enrolment procedure, enrolment requirements, classroom

condition, subjects enrolled and subject instructors.

Validation of the Research Instrument

The research instrument was subjected to a dry run. These were

distributed to a sample group other than the respondents. These were the

freshmen from Tanchuling College, Legazpi City. Questionnaires were

distributed personally to the BSHRM freshmen students of Tanchuling College for

them to answer. Their suggestions were incorporated in the questionnaire and

necessary corrections were made. The finalized questionnaires were distributed

to the final respondents who were the freshmen students of Mariners Polytechnic

Colleges Foundation Legazpi City enrolled in BSHRM and BSHM for first

semester S.Y. 2010-2011.

Data Gathering Procedure

In the conduct of this study, the researchers followed procedures in order

to gather the needed data. The research procedure consisted of the following:

choosing the topic and stating the objectives and the problem to be studied ;

the reading and collecting related literature and studies which were composed of

facts and principles that had bearing with the study and the drafting of the

theoretical and conceptual framework. The questionnaires were prepared and

submitted to the adviser for corrections. A written letter for permission to

30

approved by the Department Head and also submitted to the office of VPAA.

Moreover, a dry run was conducted before the distribution of the approved

questionnaires. The researchers personally retrieved the answered

questionnaires. The responses were tallied, analyzed and interpreted according

to the statement of the problem.

Statistical Treatment

The researchers employed the statistical tools necessary to arrive at the

needed results. The statistical treatment applied were the frequency distribution,

percentage count, and weighted mean because of its appropriateness to the

nature of the data to be analyzed.

Frequency count was used to determine the demographic profile of the

respondents in terms of age, sex, status, family monthly income, school

graduated from and number of siblings. A frequency count refers to the number

of times a particular score or observation occurs in the survey questionnaire.

Weighted mean is a modification of the usual mean that assigns weight to

the observations to be arranged. This was used to the quantitative units of

responses in the value scale. Specifically, this was applied in determining the

demographic profile, perceptions, the problems encountered and the possible

recommendations from problem number 2 to number 4, using the formula 1:

WM = f (x)

N
31

Where:

WM = average weighted mean

f = frequency

. x = weight given to the category

= summation

N = total number of respondents

Likerts scale was also applied to identify the perceptions, and the possible

recommendations using the scale. For the problems encountered by freshmen

students of hospitality course at MPCF-Legazpi City the scale was used:

Scale Numerical Rating Adjectival Rating

4 3.50 - 5.0 Strongly agree

3 2.50 - 3.49 Agree

2 1.50 - 2.49 Partially agree

1 1.0 - 1.49 Disagree
