Traffic Links and Arrival
How to get here
By air
The airport is located nine kilome-
tres to the north of the city centre.
There are very good non-stop ser-
vices between Dresden and air-
ports in Germany (Frankfurt, Ds-
seldorf, Munich, Cologne/Bonn,
Stuttgart, Hamburg), Switzerland
(Basle, Zurich), Great Britain (Lon-
don Heathrow) and Russia (Moscow
Sheremetyevo).
The airport is directly accessible
by car and by public transport.
A taxi ride to the city centre takes
15 to 30 minutes, depending on the
time of day, and costs 16 to 20 Euros.
The S-Bahn line no. 2 connects the
airport with Dresden-Neustadt sta-
tion (approx. 15 min.) and Dresden
main station (approx. 22 min.).
By rail
Dresden has two intercity train sta-
tions Dresden main station and
Dresden Neustadt station and is
connected to all major German cit-
ies via the ICE and EC/IC Deutsche
Bahn network. Aarhus, Budapest,
Bratislava, Prague, Vienna and
Zurich are directly accessible on
an international level. The Eurostar
makes connections to Great Britain
possible through the Channel Tun-
nel via Paris or Brussels.

Dresden can be reached easily by
car via the motorways A4 (Cologne
EisenachChemnitz), A 13 (Rostock
Berlin) and A 17 (Prague). The city
is also connected to the transport
network via the main roads B6, B97,
B170, B172 and B173.
Bus lines provide a fast, inexpen-
sive direct connection between
Dresden and major cities such as
Berlin, Munich, Vienna and Prague.
Most buses go several times a day,
depending on the line, with stops
at various points along the route.

The legal tender in Germany is the
Euro. In addition to bureaux de
change, all major banks can be found
in the city, with numerous branches.
Cash machines are available outside
opening hours.
Tips
Service and VAT are generally in-
cluded in the prices. However, in
many service sectors tips are tradi-
tionally given. 10 percent is usual,
with the amount depending on the
level of satisfaction with the service
provided.
Taxi
It is not usual for taxis to be hailed
whilst driving. Instead, you can find
a number of taxi ranks in the city.

Opening hours
In Dresden, shops in the city centre
are usually open Monday to Satur-
day from 10 am to 8 pm. Large su-
permarkets and shopping centres
open until 10 pm, in some cases.
Most shops are closed on Sundays,
with the exception of bakeries, train
stations and petrol stations.
Public transport
Dresden has a well-developed public
transport system. You can buy tick-
ets at stops, on the transport and at
service points. Random ticket checks
take place travelling without a valid
ticket is punished with a fine. There
is also an S-Bahn network in Dresden
and the surrounding area.

The Frauenkirche, the Blue Wonder
or the Semper Opera House: dis-
cover Dresden in a whole new way
on a Segway. Literally set the wheels
in motion, give your feet a break and
explore the loveliest sights in the
Saxon metropolis with a profes-

Choose from two tour routes, with
registration online or by phone. Tours
usually take approx. 3 hours (safety
briefing included).
In the 2012/13 season, Dresden Phil-
harmonic Orchestra will be moving
to a new concert hall; the sound of
Dresden is travelling through the
city. When renovations are over, the
orchestra is looking forward to a
concert hall that can compete on an
international level. During the reno-
vations, which are now beginning,
the orchestra will be playing other
venues, some new, some familiar.
New: the Albertinums atrium and the
large theatre of the Staatsschauspiel
playhouse; familiar: the large hall at
the Hygiene Museum, the Frauen-
kirche and Kreuzkirche churches,
the Kronensaal hall at Albrechtsberg
Castle and the large hall at the ICC.
Visitors can look forward to musical
highlights with guests of interna-
tional renown: on 16 and 17 March
2013 they can plunge into the world
of Beethoven with Reinhard Goebel
and Viktoria Mullova at the ICC Dres-
den, while on 13 and 14 April a concert
at the Albertinum will be prefaced by
discussion with principal conductor
Michael Sanderling. On 8 June Ingo
Metzmacher, a frequent guest at the
Philharmonic Orchestra, will be con-
ducting Anton Bruckners Symphony
No. 8 in the Frauenkirche.

Guests can enjoy Saxon cooking and

There are five different restaurants
in all: the Caffee, the Wine Room,
the Beer Saloon and Electors Room,
the Ristorante Bellotto and the
Kleiner Italiener, in the next-door
Basteischlsschen (Bastei Castle).

den are a great summer gathering
place. The simple, speedy, relaxed
cuisine puts guests in a peaceful
frame of mind for spending time
under the shade of the trees in what
must be one of the loveliest spots
in Europe.

takingly restored sandstone vaults
and enjoy whatever goes with beer,
from Saxon potato soup or crispy
knuckles of pork to Harz cheese. The
highlight among all these mouth-
watering delicacies are Saxon Eier-
schecke and Quarkkeulchen, one
cold and one hot dessert made to
traditional local recipes.
A staircase housed in glass leads up
to the terrace, which commands a
breathtaking view of the River Elbe
and the Theaterplatz. Towering high
above all this is the dome of the Frau-
enkirche. Another famous neighbour
is the Semper Opera House.
Even famous statesmen do not miss
out on this beer highlight: Vladimir
Putin and Gerhard Schrder are two
of those who have clinked their
glasses here.

Schillergarten
This thoroughly restored restaurant
and caf by the Blue Wonder bridge

Art Nouveau elements, dark wood,
