official doctrine itself was based on the DND, though there were
also some differences. These included suggesting that India might
usenuclearweaponstoretaliateagainstattacksusingChemicaland
Biological Weapons (CBW) and that Indian retaliation to any

 Indiasprimaryobjectiveistoachieveeconomic,political,social,
scientific and technological development within a peaceful and
democraticframework.

ofselfdefence.

deterrence.
Indias peacetime posture aims at convincing any potential
aggressorthat:
any threat of use of nuclear weapons against India shall invoke

retaliation with nuclear weapons to inflict damage unacceptable
totheaggressor.
The fundamental purpose of Indian nuclear weapons is to deter

India will not be the first to initiate a nuclear strike, but will
respondwithpunitiveretaliationshoulddeterrencefail.

alignedwithnuclearweaponpowers.
