Focus: Characteristics of Plane Figures
1.12 The student will identify and trace, describe, and sort plane geometric

figures (triangle, square, rectangle, and circle) according to number of sides,

vertices, and right angles.

Activity To begin this lesson, the teacher will start by going over the different plane
geometric figures (triangle, square, rectangle, circle, rhombus, and oval). The
teacher will then go over the properties of each shape --- pointing out the
number of sides, vertices (corners) and angles.

After the teacher has went over plane geometric figures, the teacher will go to
the smartboard activity Shape Attributes.

During this activity students will once again go over the different shapes and
their properties. After that mini review (7 slides) they will move on to the next
portion.

The next part of this activity will be finding certain shapes and coloring them in
using the smart board pens.
The first slide of this (slide 7) says:
Find the triangles and color them
There will be different shapes on the board and the student must color in only
the triangles.
--
There are 6 slides for this part of the activity which feature each shape. One by
one, students can take turns coloring in the shapes on the slides. This allows
each student to work with the smartboard and better understand the material.

The last portion of this activity is tracing and drawing shapes. This begins on
slide 13. The instructions say to Trace each triangle then to Draw three
triangles. There are also 6 slides of this portion so every student will have a
chance to work with the material and the smartboard. One by one, some
students will first trace the shapes and then some will draw the shapes. If time

permits, the teacher can go back through these slides to allow more students to
draw the shapes.
