All American Boys Chapter 1 Lesson

Listen and read along with a recording of Chapter One of All American Boys.

Answer the discussion questions about the characters, events, and themes
within the first chapter.

Work with small group to answer discussion questions and share conclusions
with the class.

Predict what will happen to Rashad after this chapter.

Anticipatory Ask a few students to recap the Marcus Jeter case from the day before. Ask
Set them to identify social issues brought to light through this case.

Watch the All American Boys trailer one more time and have the students
answer this question on their bellringer:

After looking at the book cover and watching the book trailer, what do you
think the book will be about?

Lesson After the lesson, students will have read the first chapter of All American
Objective Boys. They will begin to discuss the themes, events, and character
interactions from the first chapter. They will also summarize the chapter and
predict what will happen in future chapters.

Input Students will read the first chapter as the whole class and will listen to a
recording of the book by the author Jason Reynolds.

Check While the recording is being played (25 minutes), the teacher will stop at
Understandin points in the chapter to recap what is happening and see what the students
g notice so far. Good places to pause are pg. 16 and pg. 19.

Guided Students will then be put into groups of 3-4 to answer the discussion
Practice questions. At least one person in the group needs to write down the answers
and one person needs to share with the entire class.

Independent Students will do the closure and bellringer independently. The next chapter in
Practice the book will be read independently as well, but this is for another day.

Accommodati There are many ELL students in our classes. While students are reading the
ons book independently, they will have the option to read with the recording for
better understanding.
