Lesson Plan:

Mathematics: Fractions

In this lesson, students will play the game called

Pearl Diver. It is a game that involves fractions
on a number line and your knowledge of them.

Students Will:
1. Learn different forms of fractions and how
they line up on the number line.
2. Use the game Pearl Diver to detect the
fractions on the number line.
Essential Questions:
Students should be able to understand where
different fractions are placed on a number line and
different forms a fraction can appear in but they
end up having the same value.
Content Area Standards:
For my kindergarten class, my students will be able
to: 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in
solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
3. Construct viable arguments and critique
the reasoning of others.
4. Model with mathematics.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
6. Attend to precision.
7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated
reasoning.
Materials:
The students will need:
1. A tablet or a computer to play Pearl Diver
on.
2. A piece of scratch paper with a pen or a
whiteboard.
Preparation:
Before the students are able to play Pearl Diver,
they need to understand the rules of fractions and
how they progresses with different denominators.
For me, I must play the game a few times and go
over it so that I can help my students when they
are playing the game.
The game has different levels but there are 2
scenarios. One scenario is when you move the
diver to the fraction that they tell you to, but they
don't tell you where it is on the number line given
on the bottom of the sea. You try to collect as
many pearls as you possibly can before the time is
up. The next scenario is when you cut up an eel
into equal pieces and you must be as precise as
possible.
This game allows you to work on your fractions and
understand the different ways a fraction can
appear but end up having the same value as
others.
Lesson Procedure:
1. Go over fractions and their meaning with the
students.
2. Give the students examples to work on in
groups and ask for help if its needed.
3. Have each student grab a tablet or go to an
computer and pull up brainpop.com.
4. Have them find Pearl Diver and let them
play for 20 minutes and walk around to see
if they need any help.

Assessment:
After the students are done playing the game, we
will go over fractions again and see if they have
retained what they have learned in class that day.
Extension Activity:
After class at home, the students can play other
games on brainpop.com that will allow them to
keep working on fractions.
