What are the different

parts of a cave?
Common Core Standard:
2-ESS1-1. Use information from several sources to provide evidence that Earth events can occur quickly or
slowly.

Objective: Students will be able to identify the various parts of a cave, and
understand the concept of how stalagmites and stalactites are formed.

Materials:

Powerpoint
YouTube
Cave Packet
Cave Diagram
Labels
Sticky Tape
Jars
String
Epsom Salt
Recording sheets

Motivation:

Students will review what they know about caves


o What are caves
o How are they formed?
o What are they mainly made from?
I will project a diagram of a cave

Instruction:

I will explain to students that caves have many different parts that make
up the actual cave.
Focus on Stalagmite and Stalactites
Write a label and tape it the the diagram on the board
Allow students to copy the labels of the cave on their own copy.
I will then start etting the experiment set up and introduce it to the
class.

Guided Practice:

The students and I will begin setting up our experiment using the scicne
method
o Title
o Hypothesis

Individual Practice:

Each day, we will look at the jars and write down one observation abot
them while doing the unit.
After five days, students will write the conclusion and what they learned
from the experiment.

Assessment:

Students will be asked to fill out an exit ticket with one questions
o What is the difference between a stalagmite and a stalactite?
