General Approaches
The Quest: In the quest, the main character sets out on a search for something,
experiences, various adventures, and returns either triumphant or wiser.
The Initiation: A main character, (Usually a young person), is faced with a new situation
that test his or hers abilities or beliefs. How the character deals with his or his situation
determines his or hers direction.
The Union: In this pattern, a boy and a girl grow fond of each other, but their parents or
an authoritative figure or circumstances comes between them. The couple usually end up
together after overcoming the obstacle.
The Choice: The main character is faced with a difficult decision in the end of the book.
Making this decision is the highest point of the plot.
